My summer holidays are here again and finally I’ve got some time to catch up on movies. I’ve a slight problem though, I can’t remember most of what was on my must watch list and would like to ask for your collective recommendations in compiling a new one. Which films are your must-watch films, or films do you find particularly interesting?
So far I’ve already lined up:
two David Lynch films: “Eraserhead” and “Mulholland Dr”
“A Clockwork Orange” - still trying to get my hands on it
“Blood and Bones” - that film with Takeshi Kitano in it
“Magnolia” - Dale has been recommending this for ages so hopefully I’ll get to watch it this time round
“Capote”
“Deliverance”
As you can gather I do like films that are a bit dark, or a bit quirky, though I’m not adverse to other types of movies. So fire away!
If you are into artistic/strange movies like “Eraserhead” try watching either “Delicatessen” or “the city of lost children”. “The secret adventures of tomb thumb” would also fit that catigory.
AACCKK!! I love Johnny Depp…I think he’s a magnificent actor. But the whole drug thing was horrible. I felt like I was on drugs right along with them, and I found myself practically begging them not to do anymore because I’d had enough. The same thing with Trainspotting, with Ewan McGregor. I couldn’t get through either of them because of it.
But that’s just me. They both are “dark” films and would probably be a good recommendation for someone who likes that type of movie.
I recently saw Mel Gibsons "Passion of the Christ"and was left speechless by the graphic nature of it all. I’m not a Christian and came to the film with an open mind. One of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen. Not for the faint hearted, of any religious persuasion.
Delicatessen is a classic and a must see. I would also highly recommend Polanskis “Chinatown”, a hugely textured complex movie with dazzling performances allround.
Not necessarily “must-see,” but on the darker side: “A Boy and His Dog,” and “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.” Must-see: “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.”
Oh, and “The Big Lebowski” and “Withnail and I,” if you need to lighten things up.

Also liked ‘The Cooler.’ Never thought I’d like a movie with Cameron Diaz in it but ‘In Her Shoes’ was good I thought.
yea, Macy is really becoming a major figure which I hope doesn’t ruin part of his appeal. Another film with Macy is Panic which gets good reviews but which I really didn’t like all that much. It just was too ugly in the world it portrayed.
Quills was good. Speaking of kinky, which I’m not usually a fan of mostly because most films that are, or try to be, are usually crass, Secretary was pretty good.
The Island was also pretty good I thought. (Sci-fi)
Also like King Kong although I probably wouldn’t want to sit through it’s 3 hours again. It was very good though. -I actually was bored with Lord of the Rings, (also Peter Jackson why i mention it) It looked great but I found the movie itself tedious.
Eraserhead–and I’m going to go with a flat statement here–is the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen. Nothing really even comes close. And for me to say it’s the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen–that’s saying something.
Though it’s been a long time since I’ve seen them, I really liked some of Alan Rudolph’s earlier movies, especially Choose Me and Trouble in Mind. Quirky and touching.
