Midwest C&F Get Together *UPDATE*

Hello, a few new bits of info about the Midwest C&F meeting:

Grey Larsen’s whistle workshop will be held from 10am - Noon and 1:30 - 3:30pm at the Banneker Community Center.

Our regularly scheduled slow/learning session meets at the same location from 4-6pm so feel free to stick around for that after the workshop.

Unfortunately Grey’s monthly session at Borders Books and Music met for the last time on September 6th. This means there will NOT be a session at Borders on Friday, Oct. 4th (the day before the workshop).

Grey is working on finding a new location and maybe a new day/time for his session.

I added a couple of photos to the Web site:

I am so bummed I can’t go to this. I have to play a wedding reception Oct. 5. If the C&F gathering goes well, and I’m sure it will, please make plans for the next one and post them!

Have fun & blow proud, whistlers.

thurlowe,

You do know about the Al Purcell Irish Music Gathering the previous weekend in Ann Arbor, right? As far as I know there are no whistle workshops, but there are plenty of other workshops, a wicked-looked concert for Saturday night (including this year’s all-Ireland whistler, Isaac Alderson), and sessions every night and probably all day Sunday.

Dear colomon,

Thank you bunches for clueing me into that fest. I didn’t know about it. And yet, I can’t do that either, due to some other music stuff.

I hope I CAN make it to the Lunasa concert on Thursday. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Cara

Nope, I’m going to be in Toronto that night. On the plus side, I get a lesson with Loretto Reid and can visit the Dora Keogh session – but the Ann Arbor gang will probably be partying with Lunasa while I am doing it. Sigh.

I’m so jealous! I should probably take lessons from you first, then graduate to Loretto!
In a sense, I have-- I printed your list of popular Ann Arbor session tunes and have learned most of the ones I didn’t know. The Broken Pledge is a favorite.

really just wanted to pop this up to the top for a bit longer…

Anyone who wasn’t aware of the Midwest C&F meeting before but would like to attend, please email me to let me know (especially if you’re interested in the workshop).

Thanks, Brett see you there

Hiya,

Here’s an excerpt from an email Grey Larsen just sent me (those of you coming to Bloomington, let me know if you think this sounds like a good idea…).

Grey’s interested in doing this just after the workshop on Saturday from 4-6PM OR on Sunday (Oct. 6th) from 1-3PM. It would be an additional $20 for 2 more hours of Grey.

"i had one brainstorm idea about something additional i could offer during that day or the next. seems like if people are coming from a long distance it might be nice for them to be able to partake in more than just a 4 hour workshop.

in my book i have a large section called “Great Performances
Transcribed (Transcriptions of Commercial Recordings from Twenty-Two Important Flute and Tin Whistle Players, 1926-2001).” i go into some depth about each player’s styles and techniques. i could see doing a workshop focusing on a number of these players who recorded on whistle, listen to the piece i transcribed, full speed and half speed, examine the transcription, discuss the music, that sort of thing. not a hands-on workshop but a fine lesson in irish whistle
history and evolution. the whistle performances i transcribed are by seamus ennis, willie clancy, josie mcdermott, cathal mcconnell, mary bergin, donncha o briain (aka denis o’brien), breda smyth, sean ryan, micho russel and myself."

Is this book generally available? It sounds like a great idea!

The manuscript for the book was submitted to the publisher (MelBay) about 6-8 weeks ago. I’m not sure when it’s due to be published. It’s a book on Irish Flute & Whistle playing, players, history, technique, etc…

Should be great when it comes out. I think Grey will have some samples to show at the workshop(s).
