Are a handful of Midwest whistlers (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan) interested in visiting Bloomington, Indiana at some point?
If so, I could probaly arrange a whistle/flute workshop with Grey Larsen. If we had 10 or so people it probably wouldn’t be too expensive per person. I’ve mentioned this idea to him in the past and he seemed interested…
We also have a couple of regular local sessions and one “slow” session, so we could schedule it in conjunction with one or more of these.
Email me if you’re interested. If we get about 10 people (or more) I’ll start looking into things.
I just spoke with Grey and here’s what he proposed:
He said he could do a 4 hour workshop
(2hrs.–lunch break–2 more hrs.)
and he said the best time for him would probably be Saturday October 5th.
Grey leads a session at a bookstore here in Bloomington the 1st Friday of the month from 7:30-9:30PM, so anyone able to make it to town Friday evening could catch the session Friday night.
Saturday afternoon from 4-6 is our regularly scheduled “slow/learning” session. We could schedule the workshop for earlier in the day so people could still attend the session if they wish (10am-Noon & 1-3pm).
Sunday evening there is a session at a local pub called The Irish Lion, so anyone staying through the weekend could also catch this session too.
I did ask Grey how much he would charge and he said $25 if people only want 2hrs. or $50 if people want 4hrs (per person). Does that sound reasonable?
Anyway, I can post more details later, but I want to see how many people would be able to make it on Oct. 5th?
Here are some other suggested activities sent to me by Thurlowe:
meet & socialize with other C & Fers
try out as many flutes and whistles as possible
-learn how to tweak whistles
-get ideas & instruction on how to store and carry flutes & whistles
-play music (preferably with a group including guitarists,
fiddlers, etc)
-buy whistles & whistle-related stuff (could someone like Thom Larson bring a selection of merchandise?) Thom?
I am interested in Hoosierizing the October 5th weekend, the week before our Thanksgiving Day. Great idea.
As this part of Canada is South of Detroit and south of most of Michigan, Ontarians may have an interest in attending as well if you have no objection.
The Workshop contents would be an important factor to me. Having Grey Larsen help me improve my playing skills and techniques is a wonderful opportunity. But if the workshop is about Fixing, building, carrying etc., then it wouldn’t hold as much interest to me.
So, 3 questions:
Could a Workshop contents outline be made available?
What skill level would the workshop be geared towards, and 2(b), would Grey himself be personally working with all the attendees at all levels ?
Just for curiosity, what would Grey charge for 1 person to hire him for a 2 hour or a 4 hour lesson ?

Ouch, that’s a completely undoable weekend for me. (Hmmm… come to think of it, the two or three weekends before and after that are bad for me, too. Busy life.)
Sounds like you guys are off to a wonderful start for the mid-westerners! I do wish all of you the best and hope for a great meeting!
If I may offer a bit of advice I’ve learned from the last two years of doing this out here…structure is great and wonderful, but leave a bit of time for spontenaety (sp?) as well! I’ve found time and time again that the best times tend to be the ones nobody planned.
Anyway, I’m no expert, just thought I’d share my experiences.

P.S. If I might be allowed the opportunity to gloat, I still think Mack Hoover’s coining of “The Great Rocky Mountain Session” has a bit of a ring to it don’t you?!
I really would like to attend, but it is too dependent on further medical improvement to commit at this point. I’m really not sure I’m up to a five hour solo drive at this time.
I;ll keep watching - don’t count on me, but if you do get it off, we’ll see.

The workshop would be Grey Larsen helping us improve our playing skills and techniques. The "Fixing, building, carrying" were just ideas of other things people might do (if interested) while we had a bunch of whistle folks together.
I’ll see if Grey can give me an outline of what he usually teaches and what he has to say about one workshop for people at different playing levels.
