In answer to ChattieKathy’s query in the other thread: I live about 20 minutes from Elizabethtown College. I did not teach there. I did some teaching for Millersville University (Advanced Problems in Education) and lots for Lebanon Valley College (Advanced Practicum in Sound Recording Technology). When I retire from public school teaching, I hope to do more work at LVC.
There was a time a few years ago when I attended every hammer dulcimer festival I could find. Some were the Upper Potomace festival in West Virginia, Cranberry Festival in News York State, and others…I found as the years went on, the festivals tended not to grow with the players. They continue to have very interesting workshops for beginning and intermediate players, but ignore experienced players. We all have a lot to learn at any level, and I truly wish there would be a HD festival that dealt with the issues experienced players need to improve.
I have not found any whistle festivals, but it would be a hoot. I can imagine the whistle greats coming and teaching us in workshops. Oh well…It COULD happen.
Rochester, hm? My grandparents live in Ithaca, and I will be visiting them over Christmas break this winter-sometime between Dec. 18 and Jan 20, I think. Although Rochester is a two hour drive, my brother has a good friend currently going to school there, as well, so he may want to go visit her. If that is the case, do you think there is any chance we could get together?

Chattykathy: I will let you know when I am in Erie. Have you ever been there?

I was near there one time. There is some great waterfowl hunting places up there and my hubby and I have been there checking out his great hunting spots. A friend also has a place near there where he is building a cabin so I hope to get more chances to check it out. Maybe on one of his hunt trips I will go along and you and I can get together.
I spent 6 years in Pittsburgh, PA and then 15 years in Edinboro, PA which is 20 miles South of Erie. I now live in the DC-Baltimore area; but, my son and his wife live in Cambridge Springs (30 miles south of Erie). If you guys start to get anything going in that area, let me know. I’ve been looking for an excuse to get up the Edinboro, and my son and daughter-in-law both like celtic music in general, Irish and Scottish.
It wonderfull country there and I sincerely miss my Pensylvania woods and mountains.
Karina and Aventuria…
Hey, I thinkt it would be cool to get together with you two in Rochester sometime if the possibility arises, seeing as you Karina might be there for a bit over Christmas break…

I don’t need to worry about taking the advanced dulcimer workshops yet! ha ha. But your right about most of them being geared towards beginners and intermediates. I went to the Upper Potomac Festival in March and learned alot! Rick Thum was my instructor and he is great! It was even better for me because he built my dulcimer. This is how I got interested in whistling too. This year at the UPDF Guy George gave a mini workshop on the whistle. I took my junky Walton whistle along and took the class and was so new to it I was lost from the beginning, but I didn’t give up, I went home and worked on what he taught and now I can play. By the way he is an awesome dulcimist too!
You mentioned that you haven’t found any whistle festivals, I think I remember seeing something about a workshop in Gettysburg every year. That’s closer to you than me. I will have to do a search. If I find out anything I will let you know
Rochester is reachable from CT! I’ve also been known to prowl as far south as Reading PA, and occasionally think about venturing east. . .but not as far as Boston.
Instrument player - take out the spamblocker from the email address, it should look like a normal “at yahoo” address when you’re done. This blocks spam programs from finding me.
Lee and Karina (and interested others) - a get together would be awesome! I don’t yet know where I will be for Christmas as my boyfriend lives in Seattle now, but if he comes back to Erie for it… Potential exists. It also depends on when school lets out for break, I’ll check on that when I get back. Let’s keep this in mind!
ChattieKathy: I would be VERY interested in a whistle festival in Gettysburg. If you can find out about it, please contact me off or on board.
Keep hammering.
Cheers.

Golly gee! I have been searching for this for about an hour but I found it! Down at the bottom of the page it mentions about workshops. Don’t know if they have them set up or if they are looking for Ideas. If they set one up I will go for sure! My hubby can check out the battle fields while I do the whistle thing!
I filled out the “Lady of the Creek” survey so now we wait to see if I get a response. I noticed that they have a “West Coast Whistles” ad on the home page. Maybe Sandy Jasper knows something about it.
Edited to add: Sandy has a link to The Lady of the Creek website from her site so she probably does know something about L of L workshops.

The lady, Marguerite Plank, sponsored an Irish Session 101 that ran from 10-4 on a Saturday. It was followed folks just sitting around playing until after 11pm. I went and had a great time. I posted about it back in the beginning of the summer. There was significant interest in a repeat performance.
A very different setting than the Pub for playing: Small dance hall out in the woods.
Most of the folks camped overnight.

Hey, that’d be cool! If it’s in erie and after november I can almost definitely come. >
Oh, I’m sorry Beth.
It would be in Gettysburg. That is down in the Southern part of Pa. You would be more than welcome to meet me at my place and ride from there though. I think It takes me about 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours to get there.
Heh, well we’d have to see. I’ll be in school at that point and less prone to gallivanting about the countryside. Which is why I’m doing as much of that as I can right now!
