I wanted to post one final announcement about the Midwest C&F Meeting and Grey Larsen Workshop (this Saturday, October 5th in Bloomington, Indiana).
We have 13 people currently signed up for the 4 hour whistle workshop with Grey Larsen. Grey asked to limit it to 20 people so we can handle a few more if anyone’s still interested.
Two of the regular local sessions were cancelled or rescheduled so there will not be a session Friday night (Oct. 4th). There will be a slow/learning session Saturday after the workshop and a new session has been announced for Sunday night (Oct. 6th) from 6-8PM.
There was at least one person who thought the meeting/workshop was in Bloomington, Illinois, so I should restate that it is in Bloomington, INDIANA. However, I think Thom Larson (www.thewhistleshop.com) may have something in the works for next year and he IS in Bloomington, ILLINOIS.

Did you all have a good time? Good enough for another Midwest get-together?
We did have a good time (I think…) but we needed more people! I don’t think we had enough for C&F GoodTime Critical Mass.
We ended up with only 4 C&F’ers in attendance (Bretton, Firefly, RCORC, and Duane Murphy who doesn’t have a username) and 2 non-C&F’ers.
The workshop went well but I think we could’ve spent twice as much time on some of the topics we covered…a nice bonus was we all got some exerpts from Grey Larsen’s new book on trad. Irish Flute & Whistle which should be out from MelBay in a few months (500+ pages!). Grey taught everyone “The Lonesom Jig” by ear and went over different places to add ornamentation and good breathing spots.
We had a nice lunch and got to chat about whistles and other stuff during the break.
After the workshop two people stayed for our regularly scheduled slow/learning sesion.
Firefly taught everyone a tune called “The Oyster Wife” (great tune!).
I haven’t posted to the board in ages (not since we were on the old board, explaining my lack of a current username), but I wanted to publicly thank Brett for setting up the workshop with Gray Larsen. I personally had a great time and learned some really useful tips for improving my playing. Unfortunately, I’ve spent years learning some bad habits, and it will require some practice time to implement some of Gray’s suggestions. But to me, the workshop was very worthwhile. It is really too bad that some people who said they would come never bothered to show up. I hope that Gray and Brett weren’t too dissappointed with the turnout. From my perspective, the small class size allowed Gray to pay more attention to each of us individually. Regarding Gray’s upcoming instructional book, it really looks good and will have 2 CD’s included with it. It is really a massive tome (more than an inch thick) with lots of detail. I don’t know what it is going to cost, but I plan on buying it.
Duane
Yep, I had a good time, also. Fun people and great instruction. I was a little concerned going in because I’ve only been playing about 6 months, but I didn’t have a lot of trouble keeping up (it was a nice challenge)…REALLY glad I brought a tape recorder though.
My thanks to Brett and Grey, and I agree with Duane, when that book comes out I’ll be buying it.
Nice meeting you all
