(low) F whistle?

Curious as to opinions regarding low F whistles to be desired or avoided. A search using “F whistle” was hopeless.

Well, I’ve probably opened my mouth too much today regarding my whistle opinion, but here’s another one. I’m really happy with my Overton F.

This is a Romanian Hymn song (the tune part of the song) written by a friend of a friend. He’s written thousands, but this one is one of the favorites of the congregations that I’m familiar with there. The title is “Numai](http://www.tullberg.com/numaiharul.mp3%22%3E%22Numai) Harul” which when translated means “Only Grace”. It is, of course, played on the Overton.

Have a wonderful rest of your Saturday everyone. I’ll go and be quiet now

I’ve only had my Overton F for about three or four weeks but its lovely. I tried it at the HobGoblin Music shop at Red Wing, Minnesota but did not initially purchase it as I was on a several day trip. It kept calling me back, so on my way home I stopped back in Red Wing and the Overton and I “hung out” together for a bit and I plunked down the cash and we left together. I haven’t been sorry or at least not about purchasing the Overton  Such a nice mellow sound. It’s very balanced across both octaves, it’s easy blowing and simply a joy to play. Has me hungering after a low D now.

that’s my two pennies worth of opinion…on this topic anyway.

I’ve noticed that Ronaldo Reyburn offers a low F.

I’ve owned three Low F whistles:

  1. Chieftain - it was very good

  2. Overton (by Colin Goldie) - a little better yet

  3. Grinter red lancewood - my personal favorite; very beautiful, but very expensive.

ALways hear great things about the Burke composite.

I’m pretty sure Shannon Heaton of Siucra plays an Ian Lambe F… If I’m right… it sounds amazing… Of course… it might have something to do with the player…naw!..

I also have a lancewood Grinter low F. It’s my only low F and it’s a beauty. You may want to consider the maintenance factor, though. Any wooden whistle needs humidity, naturally or otherwise. If/when the whistle dries out, the metal fitting become loose and may even fall off. Here in New Jersey the colder months are extremely dry(I imagine it’s no better in Michigan) so I was forced to make hard cases for my woooden whistles and put a Dampit in each case (a Dampit is a guitar humidifer that’s available from Elderly and almost any music shop). The case that houses my Grinter low D and low F has two Dampits in it.Forced hot air heating makes it worse. If these conditions apply you might want to stick with a metal whistle. My guitars, bouzoukis etc. all have individual humidifiers in the cases as a room humidifier would wreak havoc with my books. Am I sorry I bought the wooden ones? Not on your life. The tone difference alone is worth all the aggro. Good luck with the search.

I think it may be a problem with the search engine. I’ve been doing searches recently and have come up with similarly confusing results

If you look hard enough you should be able to find a thread in which a similar discussion occurred about 2 months ago. Loren gave a fairly extensive review on the Low F question.

I concur with the above opinions on the Overton Low F. I got mine just two weeks ago and absolutely love it. You may want to check with The Whistle Shop. Last time I checked Thom still had one in stock.

I have a Colin Goldie/Overton low F that is terrific - sounds low, but plays as easily as a high.

I’ve got a recording of my Overton F on the flute/whiste comparisons page on:

Click on the Irish Music link, then then flute/whistle comparisons link.

Cheers,

Michael

Paul - Are you also using the recommended almond oil on the Grinter? Mine is holding up just fine (I live in a NYC apartment with radiator heat which has already killed the ivory handle of a custom knife upon import from the South)with an inner swab to remove moisture and an application of oil after each session. They are nice though; do you have any other keys? Philo

Shannon does indeed have a Lambe low-F. We had a low F session acoupleofmonths agoand everyone else was playing Overtons.I think she wants an Overton.
