i do love the sound of them…I have been on my feadog soprano d and a generation C for some time, and I do love the lower sound of the C. So I figure why not go lower? I don’t really want a low D, F sounds great. I know Susato makes some, but I hear they play with too clean of a sound. I’m open to advice, so anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you!
I think the best thing to do is to try it. I do believe that some of the best low whistles are Overton whistles and Burke Viper.
You can check something here: http://www.micksvirtualwhistle.net/whistle/index.html
ah how I would love to try out a variety of whistles! But sadly, no place around here sells any whistles…
Thank you for the page of whistle sound samples!
i have found that only the Susato is really in my price range, so i think I’ll just run with that.
Hmmm, I´m not sure - the best (imo) low whistles are not that much more expensive (and I say that as a poor student
). I believe, that if you buy a thing, which serves you frequently for many years, it´s good to buy the cream of the crop.
Overton.
Yes, I think F is a popular and much appreciated low whistle key. The length is a comfortable size for many hands, and the tonality seems to fall at a “sweet spot”. I also tend to think of Overton as the reference standard - Aanvil and I had a toot on a Goldie-Overton F a few weeks ago, and we were both smiling like the whistling kitty.
But obviously there are other nice ones. The Susato is a bit “open” sounding, but with plenty of potential, and arguably a good value for the price.
The only low F I’ve ever played is the one I own and love, my Reyburn.

I’ll give a bump for the Burke Low F. I have one and I honestly think it’s perfect.
The problem with the Low F is that it’s such a nice sounding whistle that it is hard to criticize any of them. It’s just a great key.
I don’t think you will go far wrong no matter what you choose.
I"d have to agree with Schecky here. I don’t think I’ve ever played a bad Low F.

Ahh thank you all so much for the responses! ![]()
Just thought I’d let you know that I just decided to sell my Burke Low F. Hardly use it. It was made in 2007. PM if interested. Judith
I love my Burke Low F and so does everybody who tries it. Seriously you really can’t go wrong with the key of F.
Overton! My low F is one of my all time favorites.
The Susato low F is also a nice whistle and mine has a warm, rich sound and is one of the best Susatos IMHO.
I vote for MK, but good luck getting your hands on one. ![]()
I’ve got a Thornton low-f that sounds very nice.
I’m also thinking about buying a Low F and I’m pretty sure it will be a chieftain V3 Low F. I really like the sound and the way it plays of the V3 Low D, so I would think a V3 Low F would be a very lovely whistle, and not that expensive either.
Reyburn makes a very nice low F. I agree, the Overton and Burke are fine low Fs.

Ditto!
