In Powell’s music shop in Galway today I saw a couple of low whistles, now you know they don’t do it for me but I saw one you may want to check out. It was made by Ian Lambe, looked like the best made whistle in the batch, all metal, tunable etc.
Ian Lambe is son of Uilleann pipes and flute maker Eugene Lambe (as far as I know), plays in Clare bands like Bushplant.
After reading that bit about Spillanes whistles a few days ago I thought there may be a connection (pure speculation that), both are in the dollin coast and cliff rescuegroup.
Worth checking out if that’s your thing ![]()
Yes, Ian is Eugene’s son. Ian is incredibly talented…he makes guitars, too (at least, he made the one he plays). I tried a bunch of his whistles, and I think they play slightly more easily than Overtons, but have a similar sound, but a bit less reedy or edgy. Actually, Ian’s whistles are very similar (in how they play) to Burke aluminum whistles. Ian’s have a beautiful polished finish, and the tuning slide is a treat, visually and technically.

Watch it Peter, that’s the way it begins
It’s like a good bagel shop. You weren’t really expecting to eat another breakfast - but, first you smell it. Then you look in the window. You stop a guy on the street and say, “You know, it’s not really my thing, but see that blueberry bagel - it looks just your size.” So that guy buys his bagel and walks out, right past you, eating it. Oh, yeah. That’s the way it starts.
Next thing you know, BAMMO. You’re asking for the flavored creme cheese.

Erik, I didn’t realize you’d lived in Montreal. (Otherwise I don’t see how you could possibly know anything about shops selling good bagels.)
StevieJ,
We’re getting off topic here, but…
Be careful, you’ll have all the New Yorkers after you with comments like that.
Cheers,

I actually had the cream cheese on smoked salmon and brown bread but low whistles nah.
This whsitle looked very nicely made, not like someone stuck a few holes in a bit of prefab pipework (no offence meant to those who actually do that)and as I hadn’t heard the name mentioned here I dropped it but it’s not up my street (Peter street, nice tune by the way:-))
