Join in on The Monaghan Jig

I have been captivated today by The Monaghan Jig. I don’t know if anyone else likes it or not, but I’ve been working on the version in “Ireland’s Best TW Tunes”. I’ve also found a version at http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~ef//music/tunes/jigs.gif/monaghan.m.gif</a](http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~ef//music/tunes/jigs.gif/monaghan.m.gif">http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~ef//music/tunes/jigs.gif/monaghan.m.gif</a)>.

It’s not ready for recording but in a day or two, maybe. But I thought that this long weekend would be a fun one to make a learning (or recording) challenge. So anyone interested in joining me, post your AUDIO version here. If you don’t know how to post your tune, let me know and I (or someone else here) can help.

Peace,
Erik

Erik
If you have an O’Neill’s try the version there. It has four parts. The fourth part is somewhat similar to the second part of the version for which you posted a link. It’s really nice. One of my favorite tunes.

I’ve been pounding away on this tune for months; an abc version I found on the web purported to be transcribed from Mary Bergin’s playing. Since learning it, I listened to Bergin’s version on feadoga stain. It’s pretty close, not exact. I definitely like it, though. It has a second round with nice variations. And it has 4 parts. I’ve posted it before, but why not:

Thanks guys. I’ll take a look.

I found out today (by coincidence) that one of the destroyers that was injured at Pearl Harbor was the U.S.S. Monaghan. Interesting.

Anyone know the true etymology of the tune?

Also: by version I meant AUDIO version. A mini Sherlock post. By the way, where is Sherlock?

OK, I can see that everyone got really excited about this thread  Anyway, I make no claims and offer no excuses for the following clip: http://www.tullberg.com/Monaghan3.mp3

Please be kind - rewind

Eric’s Monaghan’s Jig has been added to Clips and Snips (per his request), where you can hear my version as well. Hopefully a couple more renditions will show up there.

In case anyone hasn’t yet tuned in to the fact, we have a venue for people from this board (though not exclusively) to post whistle tunes in mp3 format. There have been submissions from Australia, Philippines, Finand, Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Spain, England, (I don’t think Ireland, so far), Canada, and US. (Sorry if I left anyone out.)

We’re liberal about accepting non-whistle tunes and even non-celtic-non-whistle tunes. People have used good judgement in submissions and I’ve never rejected any. (We may have crossed the line on copyright issues. If someone submits the Titanic theme I may have to revise my thoughts on the matter.)

Every time I read a post where someone raves about some great tune they like to play, I think, “Send it in. I’d love to hear it.” (Hint, hint.)

And to make it easy, I post “News Updates” in the Clips and Snips forum everytime I update the site so it’s as convenient as possible to see what’s new. (It’s a copy of the Newspage text on the site.) AND I put the link on my posts so you can click right on over. The only other thing I can think of is to come over to your house and click the mouse for you.
Tony
