If my own experience is any indication, kids just pick up whistles..
Though the other day I was playing, and my son suddenly went running out of the room as fast as he could. I thought I’d run him off, when just as suddenly he came running back into the room with a bodhran in his hands that he threw down on the chair next to me and started hammering away on.
Oh, how I wish that were a joke 
(I think he was inspired by the Rogues at Scaroborough Faire here, since he kept wanting to go up on stage and play)

The whistle is Huge and the Human is … Sticky!
She picks up all sorts of instruments and starts playing them: whistles, recorders, ocarinas, flutes, harmonicas, pianos (well, she doesn’t pick them up). She cires when I close the instrument trunk.
No toy chest at Jessie’s house. Only instrument trunks 
An instrument trunk is a good idea… Something the size of a deadman’s chest.
You could have felt-lined shelves for woodwinds, and large spaces for drums and strings.

You know my parents finally had it with the fact that I had usurped the coffee table in the living room as a instument/sheet music/musical accesries table so I told them to get me a trunk needless to say they didn’t so now every thing is in my closet luckily I have a big closet.

My wife, 4-year-old, and I stopped at Ralph Sweet’s place on the way up to New Hampshire a couple of weeks ago. As I was primarily interested in the shop, Danielle and Alyssa were just meandering around – his place is in a very cool location, in an old mill by a stream. He saw they were getting bored after awhile, and took them 'round back to a black raspberry patch to let them pick and eat. This was wonderful, especially since we were missing our raspberries back here. Ralph is way cool, as is Walt!
Everyone who has met them in person says they’re really nice. I have talked to them only on the phone. I think they’ve heard something bad about me (or maybe they didn’t like that I said their high whistles were loud and their flute embouchures varied), because I’ve never had anything other than strained, awkward conversations on the phone with them. Oh well.

I have not been playing the autoharp enough (not every day), but I did a concert on it about a month ago. It’s a wonderful instrument. In fact, now I’ve gotten my sister-in-law into it (I gave her a lesson and she totally took to it) and I just got her one for her birthday (it hasn’t arrived yet). Strings don’t come naturally to me…I wonder if my strumming will ever sound like anything other than a beginner.

I have worked with children all my life.. Children have the urgency to always pick up object and put them in their mouths. A study performed about 10 years ago here in the U.S. and I believe in the north east region showed data that little girls have more of a oral fixation than boys at the same age and I beleive the age group studied was between 1 and 3 years of age. Little girls desired a pacifier more than little boys.

That is great the you did a concert with it already!
I think strumming is a rhythm thing and I am sure that you have great rhythm. It will come in time.
If you ever get a chance to go to hear Karla Armstrong play the autoharp, you won’t believe how great she is. She can play the melody along with the strumming! She says that you just have to find the individual note and use muscle memory to figure out the reach for the next melody note, but she is also strumming along with it too! It’s just so neat to hear. One thing you have going for you is that you have a beautiful voice so you can get away with just strumming. I think the hardest part to get use to, would be wearing the finger picks! They just feel weird to me.
Karla is giving an autoharp workshop on August 6th in Ligoner, PA and I am hoping I get to go to it. I am borrowing a friends autoharp right now but it doesn’t have a strap on it and it is really hard to hold it up where it is suppose to be. It is an old Oscar Schmidt.
Now that Joey is playing that big whistle, you and she can do duets!
