Little Whistler [pic]

Wow, a whistle that reaches down to the feet! Must be a lowlowlow F or something…

Lee:
I don’t know about a costume yet…I didn’t get him one last year, because I didn’t want to spend a lot of dough on something he’d only wear one day, and then it’d be discarded. I may feel the same way this year, but we could probably come up with a cheapo felt tunic and cap made for under $10, and that might be ok

General background on this pic: My boy always hunts me down whenever he hears me playing..I can be barely breathing into my hoover or laughing whistle, and be barely able to hear it myself, and he’ll hear it two rooms away and start looking. Whenever he gets where I’m at, he’ll steal my ‘spare’ whistle (that I bring just for him), and sit at my feet and ‘play’…Sometimes for as long as 20 minutes before his attention span is spent.

He knows which end is which on the whistle, and will always turn it around so he can blow into the mouthpiece and make a sound..which makes him smarter than me, some mornings!

I’ve got another pic of him ‘playing’ my chieftain low D in my computer room, maybe I’ll post it later. Glad you guys thought it was as cute as I did!

Greg

Sorry to say this about the charming
photo. We’ve had people write the
board in the past describing nasty
accidents where a small child fell
with a whistle in her mouth. I don’t
know if the safety issue applies
here but you might want to keep
it in mind. Best

Thanks so much for the picture. I needed a smile.

Nonsence babies have been running though the house with scissors, since time immemorial. Do keep an eye on the tyke though, he looks verry serious about all this nonsence

WW and anyone else – When did your babies/toddlers start getting the hang of blowing into the whistles?

I had gotten Gen F and G whistles and a little ocarina by the time our little one was born. She’s 8 months now, but still won’t blow into them. She loves the whistle, but just kind of chatters into it whenever I give one to her. So I got her a kazoo last weekend, and she’s doing pretty well with it (ie, getting sound out of it) as she is with the baby xylophone, electric keyboard, and, pardon the expression, bodhran. Maybe she’s just a born percussoid.

He didn’t get the hang of blowing into the whistle into nearly a year old…he did it a couple times by accident before then, but mostly just wanted to suck/teethe on them. At about a year old, I started really trying to show him how to blow into it, by making a huffing raspberry sound with my lips (imagine didgeridoo), and when he started repeating that, I started doing it on the whistle..once he realized it was his breath that caused the whistle to squeak, he didn’t need to raspberry any more. I encouraged his sound-making by making funny faces and acting all shocked and startled every time he made a noise with the whistle, which cracked him up and served as good positive reinforcement.
