Irish flute book

Hello,

In lieu of a actual human flute instructor, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books on the Irish flute. I play whistle and read music, so what I am really looking for is a book that would help a whistle player to learn the Irish flute…A book with a CD would be even better. I’m still not even sure that I’m holding it correctly.

Thanks,

Kiri

Finton Vallely has an excellent if short book, “Timber: The Flute Tutor.” It comes with a cassette tape of the tunes, and it’s great for starting you down the right road on tone and ornamentation.

Hammy Hamilton is going to have a second edition of his “The Irish Fluteplayer’s Handbook” coming out soon, and it’ll be well worth getting!

As for holding the thing, you can see one way with photos at

There are other ways; that’s just the way that works best for me.

Almost forgot, too: check out the downloadable lessons from Conal O’Grada at http://www.scoiltrad.com. They are great ways to learn the flute, and you can record yourself playing the lesson and Conal will provide you with feedback and instruction.

Best wishes and good luck on the flute,

I have the Finton Vallely book, I highly recommend it for other beginners. However, I can’t find the cassette tape anywhere. Does anyone know of a source?

FYI, I got my copy at http://www.melodystraditionalmusic.com/, which it turns out is just down the road from where I live. Easy to drop a lot of money there.
