My iPod was loaded from my now defunct laptop and has the only copy of many many downloaded songs. The iTunes on my new computer has a completely different set of songs on it. I want to take the songs off the iPod and put them onto the computer (from which I will make new playlists and put everything back on the iPod). I hear there is stuff you can download to make the iPod do that but everything i find makes you pay (or convert only 10 songs at a time). Is there a free thingy that will do this? Something even a dolt can figure out?
My daughter’s hard drive crashed and had to be replaced, and she was fretting about all her songs on her iPod. She finally managed to transfer them back to iTunes, and she’s not a computer geek - I don’t know which program she used (I’ll ask when she gets home) but here’s a few I found online:
A lot of them can be made to act as drives – you just copy the files off onto a folder.
The newest don’t work that way. Either deal with iTunes or “jailbreak” them. The Jailbreak procedure results in a linux device that you can do whatever you like with.
I wonder if this is a good reason to burn all music files onto a series of cds. Kind of a nuisance, but it gives you a hard copy to re-use.
(could this be done more efficiently with a flash drive?)
This is, in a way, analogous to the digital age problem of no longer having all your old photographs in a shoebox. A crashed hard drive may wipe out years of snapshots nowadays, if you haven’t either printed them or burned them to a cd or flash drive.
