I pod Itunes help

Any suggestions on a good source for information on managing i-tunes and an i-pod.

Contrary to the ads, I find apple products counter-intuitive. I’m trying to do several things that are routine in windows and can’t find any way to do them. For example, I want to delete an album from my itunes library. I can delete all the tunes in a album and it goes away, but I can’t highlight and delete the album directly.

Similarly, I like album artwork. I tend to buy cds that itunes doesn’t carry. Alasdair Frazier/Natalie Haas at the moment. I load it to my library. It recognizes the tune list correctly and says album artwork not available. Fine. I grab the album from the net and copy to My Documents. Then I try to cut and paste to the art box on lower left. nope. I try to open multiple windows and drag it in. nope.

Also. i-tunes library frquently and arbitrarily splits tunes (especially) from compliations into multiple ablums. Then I can’t gather then back up – bad habit.

I’ve never had an apple computer and have always respected their reputation for simple intuitive interfaces. So far I’m not impressed.

I have the opposite problem: Getting iTune downloads onto a Sandisk MP3 player. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Download the tunes on iTunes.
  2. Open Yahoo Music Jukebox.
  3. Use YMJ to import the iTunes to my Music Library.
  4. Use YMJ again to import the tunes from my Music Library to my Sandisk.

It’s a roundabout way to do it, but it works. :boggle:

By “album” do you mean a playlist that appears on the left? If so, you just highlight the playlist and hit “delete.” If you mean deleting the tracks in an album, you need to go into the libary, use list view, select the artist or album or tracks and hit “delete.” (deleting a playlist will not delete the tracks; and if you delete an artist or album in the libary you will get the choice of moving the actual song files to the trash.)

Do you have the little album art window open beneath the playlists on the left? If not, click the little box with the triangle in it next to the new playlist/shuffle/repeat buttons on the bottom left. It needs to say “drag album artwork here” before you can drag or drop. If it doesn’t you need to play the track (although you can change that setting, too).

Also. i-tunes library frquently and arbitrarily splits tunes (especially) from compliations into multiple ablums. Then I can’t gather then back up – bad habit.

There is a selection for “group compilation when browsing” in the preferences/general. You can also select all the tracks in the compilation album, hit apple-I for information and put in an “album artist” by which the album will then be sorted. Generally, you might want to poke around the information window, it’s got some useful stuff.

Me neither. I bought an ipod with no intention of ever buying an itune; I simply want something to play my music on.

I’m very frustrated by what appears to be Apple’s ethos: “we’ll make it very easy to do what we want you to do by making it impossible to do anything else”.

Stupidities like making it impossible for one Ipod to talk to many computers, for instance. That’s enormously annoying.

Thanks Bloomfield. I’ve tried the “drag artwork here” with no success. I’ll mess with it some more.

Expanding on Simon’s point, it’s not just apple. Getting music to work on the computer is easily the most frustrating technology issue I encounter. I realize they’re all competing with each other and that music is where the big money, but at various timesapple, windows, yahoo, dell and musicmatch… all screw up what I’m trying to do and then I spend hours trying to sort it out. And what I want is simple. I buy cds. I copy them on to my Dell computer. I transfer them to my player - first i-river, now i-pod classic. I sometimes slow them down to pick out tunes. No file-sharing. No tune swapping. No play lists. No tags.
