What would you sacrifice for your music?
I have two boys in the American Boychoir. Their voices have changed, but they can still sing treble when they want to. If you develop that voice before your voice changes, and if you have training and keep using it, you don’t have to lose it. Once they got past the period when their voices were breaking, they ended up with basically two ranges – they still had that treble head voice and they picked up a very nice baritone. Where they have a bit of trouble now is in the middle.
A lot of boychoirs kick the boys out when their voices change, but not the American Boychoir. For example, the Vienna Boys’ Choir only has boy sopranos and altos, but American Boychoir uses arrangements that also include changed male voices. The sound is very different, much richer than an entirely treble boychoir.
