A serendipitous remark

I’m not a religious chap by any stretch of the imagination but I’m open to sweet thoughts even if they do come at me from a religious direction. One such came my way this morning as I listened to “Thought For The Day” on the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4 (I don’t think they keep these items on the website for more than a day but if I find they do I’ll edit it into this message). It emanated from the Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks (a fellow I regard as a bit of a nincompoop usually). He was talking about the forthcoming Reith Lectures that are to be given by the musician Daniel Barenboim, and, in mentioning Barenboim’s recent work in bringing Israelis and Palestinians closer together through music, he declared, among other things, that “where words divide, music unites…we’re all voices in God’s choir.”

I don’t think you need to believe in God to enjoy that sentiment!

I have heard middle-eastern singing. I’m not so sure I’d agree with you.

You’d agree even less if you happened to be standing next to me in yonder celestial chorus. You’d better pray that my open gob has a harmonica rapidly applied to it. I do not come from a singing family.

An old choir master of mine had something to say about that situation:

“If you were blessed with a wonderful voice, sing to praise God. If you have a terrible voice, sing to get even. But everybody…SING!”

You can laugh. Talk is easy. Enduring my “singing” is an entirely different ball game. :smiling_imp:
