Identify The Maker

Can anybody help to identify the maker of this chanter, please?

It’s in concert D and by one of the recent makers in the style of Cillian O’Briain, eg Gordon Galloway, Jim Wenham, Andy Faden or Marcus Coulter, but I was wondering whether somebody who has a chanter by the same maker could post on here or, if the maker concerned were able to confirm, then that would be even better.

I don’t seem to have the facility to upload photographs directly onto the site, unlike some others, so have put them onto a proxy site instead in the form of a slide show. I hope this works and that you are able to view the pictures, because this is the first time I’ve used such method.

Thank you and if anybody can also assist as to how to upload photos direct to the site, that would also be useful.

Wild guess: Vignoles?

t

My guess is that its an early Cillian O’Briain chanter.

Coulter makes in the style of Dave Williams. Looks more Jim Wenham than the others.

Mickey Dunne

Same top with the beveled support

My money is on Cillian, the little angle piece on the chanter cap whispers Cillian tae me,but that could be a loada bollax. Why don’t ye send a picture to him and ask.Come tae think o it why don’t ye send a picture to all the above and ask.that way ye will know fer sure who didnae make it.

You can’t upload files here. What you can do is upload your image files to a hosting site on the net, and then paste the URL of each file into your post between image tags. It works like this:

The result looks like this:

Doesn’t look like Cillian’s work to me. Yes, it has the scalloped holes, and the C natural key looks vaguely similar to what I’ve seen on some of his chanters, but the rest just doesn’t seem like his style at all… Cillian’s chanters also usually (but not always) tend to be marked with “Ó Bríain” near the top of the chanter.

Well it’s thrown up a few names, alright. I like the method of introducing photographs to the board and will have to see if I can work out the “tag” thing. (I’m no good at internet and computers). But it’s helpful and has done a very good job.

It’s not one of Cillian’s chanters. And I don’t think Mickey Dunne includes that gusset underneath the wind pipe. The mounts appear to be crafted a lot differently, too.

I’d be going for Jim Wenham from the names up so far.

I’m surprised that nobody with a chanter by any of the makers named has come forward. I don’t know how popular this board is for makers, but perhaps one will claim it.

Thanks for the input and I’m pleasantly surprised by the research effort some people go to.

Its a well known fact that Uilleann pipers are just about the nicest people on earth.

Surly they are. I mean: Surely, they are!
