I still like Fling...

I still listen to The Blackbird by Fling, now and then, and every time I do I am amazed and consider it to be a wonderful blend of songs, pipering and singing. A Dutch group that makes a great case for the universal quality of Irish music.

Since the piper in Fling is a boardmember [and a modest one] I’ll post a link to some of his playing:

…one of his own compositions, and one that I had to learn to play as soon as I heard it. [Dunno if my translation of the tune on a Dset or whistle sounds as good as his playing on the flat set!!]

Return to Clifden was my reason for buying a B chanter.

About 2 years ago, Evertjan 't Hart of Fling posted links to a picture and short sound sample (on the heatnet board) of a slightly different (pre-CD) version of ‘Clifden’ without any accompaniment. It’s equally awe-inspiring.

I transposed the pitch with software to play on my D chanter. Knowing Evertjan was using a keyless chanter I learned it a half-step up from him. It wasn’t until I received my B chanter and played against the CD that I realized he was actually a half-step lower and he lifts the chanter ‘off the knee’ to play an Fnat. I have an Fnat key on my chanter but ‘off the knee’ gives a smoother pitch bend.

Tony, Boyd, either of you care to post a simple abc or notation of Clifden, for the less endowed beginner? Thanks.

Tony, Boyd,Please, please please!!!

It’s after midnight here… I’m guessing, this is close.

Thanks, Tony, you are a gentleman… and all the other things people say about you!

My interpretation is:

And now maybe the composer will correct us all

I wouldn’t dare  It’s quite close anyway. Since some of you like it so much here is a link to a full version of the track.

Evertjan

Anyone have a copy of Fling’s 1st CD: Wild Swans at Coole? What with all the piracy stuff going on, one has to be careful… but perhaps with Evertjan’s permission, someone could make me a copy on CD and send it my way???
