Does anyone out there know a Morris tune called “Tinner’s Rabbit”? (I’m not sure of the spelling). I need to learn it by tomorrow (no pressure! ). I’ve had no luck at JC’s, but that could be because I’m not spelling it correctly. I’ll take it in any form I can get it in…MP3, dots, tab, ABC, whatever.
Go here: http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Alley/6130/dances.html. Scroll down, there’s a dance called “Tinner’s Rabbit” that uses the tune “Staffordshire Hornpipe”. They’ve got dots, midi, etc.. Hope that helps! And good luck!
Oy. And I’ve found another Morris side that dances “Tinner’s Rabbit” to a tune called “Uncle Bernard’s Polka.” To add to the confusion, our parent team doesn’t list either the dance or either of the tunes!
I’ve sent both tunes off to our squire to see if either rings a bell. I’m hoping it’ll be the polka…it’s really simple, and I can have it down by ear by tomorrow. I’m not so sure about the hornpipe…it’s kind of an odd one.
Our kids have been asked to dance at a festival tomorrow. Unfortunately, not all of them are available, and we don’t know if we’ll have enough to put together a full side of six dancers. This particular dance is a three-person dance, and the squire says the kids should be able to pick it up very quickly, but it kind of depends on my knowing the tune well enough to at least lilt it.
If it’s the polka, I’ll be able to play it though…it’s really terribly simple. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the polka.
Well, with no further input from the dancers, I learned the polka and, thank the Lord, it worked just fine. The only glitch was it sequed into “Maggie in the Wood” at some point…I don’t know what it is about “Uncle Bernard’s” that sends me off into “Maggie,” but there you go. It kept going off into “Maggie” and I kept dragging it back to “Bernard’s”…maybe we’ll have to rename it the “Maggie Bernard Polka!” The meter was the same and the number of measures was the same, and for dancing, that’s the big thing.
Heck, I’m beginning to feel like a real musician, now I can learn a piece and perform it in less than 24 hours!
