How about a fiddle forum?

Well?
I look up Irish Fiddle Forum and one of the first hits is post I made here on the Trad section. Not much going on out there except the Session.org and their format is cludgy. I’m fascinated by the Fiddle myself.
The Traditional String Instruments bit I always assumed meant banjos and mandos and zouks, their ilk. Not into that ilk. You could cram the fiddles in there but why not give them their own crash pad?

Fiddle issues are often addressed in the strings forum (along with mandolins, sitars, dulcimers, etc.) I guess everybody can’t have a dedicated forum is the problem.
But head into the strings forum. I’d love to talk fiddle, and I know some other folks who would as well.

If the Fiddle ain’t a traditional stringed instrument then I don’t know what is.

Post your query/statement in the String forum and I am sure you will get some replys in no time at all

Slan,
D.

Yes, the strings forum, hmmmmm. . . the thing is that the fiddle is unlike any of the other instruments mentioned. Sure, mandolin, banjo and fiddle are tuned the same but they are played totally differently. You don’t worry about picking direction as obsessively as fiddlers worry about bowing. (Actually, the only people I know who worry about picking direction are fiddlers who are playing mandolins or banjos.) Intonation on a fiddle is nothing like a fretted instrument at all.

I would vote for a fiddle forum myself. It actually really surprises me that there aren’t any real Irish fiddle forums on line. There’s certainly a need, given the fact that fiddles are a key component to any session. You really can’t say that about banjos, mandos, sitars, citterns, bouzoukis, guitars, or dulcimers (mountain or hammered). I don’t mean that in a “fiddlers-are-the-elite” kind of way, it’s just the way it is. The best sessions I’ve been to (and I’ve been to a lot, great, good, bad, and horrible) are always lead by fiddles, flutes, accordions, pipes, or some combination of those. I’ve been to sessions lead by banjos and dulcimers before, even one lead by an idiot sitting on the floor with a wooden spoon and some empty bottles. Inevitably, they suck. Nothing against banjo or dulcimers (though if I see that guy with the wooden spoon again, I’ll be putting a contract out on his life), they just shouldn’t be lead instruments, imnsho. They don’t have the power or sound of the four.

Plus, having a fiddle forum would give my wife a place to visit when I’m in the flute forum.

Mark

i dunno, i could listen to Kevin Griffin or Angelina Carberry all night meself. and i love John Carty’s fiddle playing but i think he’s every bit as mighty on banjo.

that’s just me though, i suppose.

As dubh said.

The fiddle probably has more of a place in the trad string forum than any other instrument. Don’t be put off by the fact that us mando and banjo upstarts posted there first. We know our place and will be appropriately respectful  :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, there are fiddle topics in there already. It just needs more fiddlers to post and redress the balance
