I can barely force myself to watch the news. What a nightmare.
My thoughts are with all of them, and also with Doc Jones and his extended “family” in the orphanages of Haiti.
A 7.0 is huge. That’s the size of the 1989 quake that collapsed most of downtown Santa Cruz. When I think of something that size in an underdeveloped country…well, “horror” is the best way to put it.

We watched the news in horror this morning and our thoughts are with Patrick and his extended family. Patrick, if there is anything that we can do, please do not hesitate to ask.
You and yours, and all involved in this disaster, are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank-you all for the thoughts and prayers. We have no contact with our people in Haiti. We are quite concerned. We care for about 250 children in the orphanage. They are currently housed in three different facilities two of which are located in areas hardest hit by the quake.
We are also nearly finished with a new orphanage which would have allowed us to house all the children in one facility. We are very concerned about that structure as well.
We are working frantically to make contact without success.

I’ve got a cousin who’s currently living in Haiti with his girlfriend. (She works for the UN doing ongoing relief work there.) His parents were frantic until they heard from him this morning. He and his girlfriend are both okay, though it took him a while to find her after the quake hit. I’m sure they’re now very busy trying to help others. What a nightmare.
I’ve been in contact with some friends who recently retired from working in Haiti. They’ve been in contact with some people in Petionville, Port au Prince, and Callabasse. They said the damage is unimaginable right now. I know of at least one friend who is missing. haiti911.ning.com is a web site that has just been set up to help people communicate with those in Haiti. If you’re waiting for news on someone or some place, this is a good website to visit. It’s only been up and running for a few hours, though.
I’m praying that Doc Jones gets some news soon. I know the waiting is painful.
A comment from one of our local enlightened ones.
The Rev. Pat Robertson, on his CBN broadcast today, offered his own explanation of the earthquake in Haiti:
“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” he said. "They were under the heel of the French … and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’
“True story. And the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal,’” Robertson said. “Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.”
If there’s a God, he isn’t in Port au Prince tonight.

I’ve received a third-hand report from someone that has seen one of our houses and reports that it’s still standing and the children are alright. I’ve made a few tentative contacts with folks in Haiti that will try to confirm that report and go to the other 2 houses and the new orphanage building to check them.
