Back to Haiti (mostly but not entirely OT)

Warning: The following post contains blatant references to God and His work in the world. If you are offended, annoyed, or all het up over things of this nature, please read no further. I’m not trying to start a fight.

OK.

Some of you might remember a post a couple years ago about my trip to Haiti (and the whistling I did there).

God has blessed His work down there tremendously, and we were able to accomplish a great deal to His glory and the help of many people.

Well, I’m going back this summer, Lord willing. I’ll leave here June 3rd (right after the next GRMS–what a banner week, eh?). I’m not taking a team this time, just going alone to learn what I can about the culture, language, etc…as much as I can cram in my head in two weeks. Of course, I plan on working my tail off as well to help out some desperately poor people, and lots of people have donated lots of money toward food, clothing, Bibles, and medicine. I’ll also be working a great deal with the orphans, teaching English and Bible.

Of course, I’ll be taking a whistle or two along, as the people down there seemed to really enjoy it (nice change from voodoo drums, I suppose). I think it would be really cool to take a few extra whistles down to give to kids…though their parents might beg to differ. :swear:

This is where you, noble reader, come in…if anyone has any playable whistles lying around taking up space, feel free to send them to me and I’ll make sure they get to the right place. I don’t want dozens and dozens of them, of course, as I won’t be able to carry a lot of them down. But I’d like to have three or four in my bag to hand to children.

Either way please pray for me and for the Haitien people, and especially the orphans of Cap Hatien and Ben Jamin, where I’ll be working. If you’d like to help out further, e-mail me and I’ll give you more info. But I’m not asking for that. All I’m asking for are your prayers, good wishes, and a few spare whistles!

Thanks!

Tom

Time for another whistle drive! Actually, Clarke has something of a reputation for quietly donating whistles for charitable causes. Perhaps Anna’s looked into this, I don’t know.

But I am certain that providing musical instruments to children is a worthy endeavor.

That’s awesome! I have a couple I can send you if you let me know how to get them to you.

(OT) Also I have quite a few new t-shirts (overstocks from embroidery jobs) I would be willing to send, but they would be heavy, and I don’t know about the logistics of getting them there. If you are interested, let me know.

Gail

I don’t have very many whistles at all in the first place so I don’t know about whistle donations, but what kinds of other things do you need? I’d love to help out! Send me a PM if there’s anything else you (or they) would like.

Oh, right, you need my address. You can send them to Wyoming for Haiti, 11 Pinto Lane, Lander WY 82520.

As for T-shirts and other stuff, they can sure be used. The only trouble is getting them there. I’m SUPPOSED to be taking down a tricycle and a wagon for the orphanage already (how in the heck is THAT going to work???). Usually clothing, towels, and sheets are appreciated. Also soap. Toothbrushes (new only please). Shoes. Shovel handles. Matresses.

Really, just think of something that you take for granted but use every day. There’s a need for those in Haiti.

Email me if you’d like and I’ll forward it on to Jim Massie, a friend of mine who goes down several times a year and has a much better idea of what’s needed and how to get it there.

Thanks–you guys are the greatest!

Tom

Thanks for all the PM’s–this will be alot of fun!

Tom

Just a quick post to let folks know that Tom has made it to Haiti and is enjoying his work there. Somehow he managed to find an email connection. He also wrote “…the kids got an enormous kick out of the tin whistles!”

Please keep Tom and his work in your prayers. I think he’s going to be there for another week and a half or so, though I’m not sure about the ending date.
