Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m back more or less in one piece (though I seem to have brought back a little “souveneer”–let’s just say I’ve been getting a lot of reading done).
It was a very productive trip; I accomplished much and learned more: I am now semi-conversant in Haitian Kreyol (working toward fluency), and I have a much better concept of Haitian life, the layout of Cap Haitien and the surrounding area, how to get around, and the general way things work down there. (Which is to say that, generally, things DON’T work down there)
It’s sad and a bit overwhelming, but with love, education, and the grace of God I don’t think it’s too late to make a difference.
I’ll have some pictures to post (including the Great Ben Jamin Orphanage Whistle Give-Away) as soon as I figure out how to get them off of Beth’s digital camera and onto the board.
Thanks to all of you who contributed whistles, prayers, money, and encouragement. It’s good to be home. It will be good to go back.
Tom
p.s. Could anyone, um, tell me how to post pictures off a digital camera without aquiring a BA in computer programming and upgrading?
Every year members of my chruch sponser a haitian child and spend them to school for a year. I think it is cool because they give us pictures about the child and then tell us what they would like to be when they grow up and other information on their lives.
Welcome back, Tom. My computer died about the time you were collecting whistles, so I didn’t get to donate any to your trip, but I will next time. When do you go back again?
Heya, Wyo! Glad you had a reasonably good experience…Montezuma’s revenge notwithstanding…
Usually to get pics off a dig camera you simply pop the chip, insert it into a thingy that hooks into the USB port and the software does the rest. I’m assuming you don’t have the thingy for the USB port, nor the software to do the auto-upload?
Do you know how to get the pictures from the camera onto your computer? That’s going to vary from camera to camera. My digital simply hooks up to my USB port…I set it for “download” et voila! Others have little ports that either the camera or the memory chip plugs into. The camera probably came with some software you’ll need to install first.
Once they’re on the computer, putting 'em on-line is easy…just grab a free account at www.snapfish.com and they’ll walk you through building an on-line album.
Ah… there you are! My computer was dead during the time you came back, so I’m just catching up. Good to hear about your trip, just wanted to say welcome back. Mmmmmm… Sounds like it’s a real good thing that Beth let you borrow all those books… hope you’re doing better.
Sara (who sadly has no idea on the getting photos off the digital camera thing)
