hobbit music

My daughter is entranced with the music which is played in the Shire in The Lord of the Rings movie. After searching, I’m wondering if that is a low whistle. She really wants to learn to play whatever that is. She has a tin whistle (cheap) an Irish friend brought her, but she prefers a deeper, mellower sound.
IF I’m on the right track, where do I begin looking for an instrument for her? Any other hints would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Welcome to the board! The low whistle is for people with large hands, not something a young girl should start out with. The holes are so far apart that even people like me with large hands take a lot of practice to reach all the holes correctly. I think the Hobbit music is tinwhistle, although I haven’t actually seen the movie yet. But in any event, the tinwhistle is a great place to start. Try a Sweetone, about $8.00. They should be available at most if not all the shops Dale has listed under “buying a whistle on the internet.”

Happy whistling!

I agree with Blackhawk on the Low D thing. I had mine reconfigured to transverse(side blown) flute. There are bigger tin whistles that have a lower tone. My Bb generation is a pleasantly low sounding.

It’s great that she’s interested.

My sister has the soundtrack and can play along with the hobbit theme on her regular D tin whistle, sounding like the exact same pitch, so I would guess it’s a regular high D.

The TW-tune of “Concerning Hobbits” is, as I was told here recently, indeed:

f a b D+ c a f e d

The length of the notes are clearly audible.
This is only a rough version. I suppose there to be some kind of gracenotes, too, but I didn’t find out yet. I use my own ones, but surely they are not the original ones.

Frodo, what would that be in ABC format??
I haven’t had a chance to get the soundtrack yet, and even though I haven’t seen the movie yet, I’d like to learn the music…

I can play the solo in Concerning Hobbits almost perfectally on my Clarke D (I can’t get all the grace notes perfect), butI played it in a band concert and it sounded fine. I am a huge fan of the movies and if anyone could tell me who plays the Whistle for the soundtrack I would appreciate it. As for the theme, it is not very hard, I figured it out fairly easily.

James Freaking Galway (for some)
And I believe Joannie Madden (for some)

Hmph… if you want to learn real irish music, ignore that stuff…

Oh, and check the main sight (chiffandfipple.com) for the mysteries section… It might be there.

There’s nothing wrong with that tune, it may not be ITM but it’s nice, and if it gets more whistlers whistling, so much the better.

If anyone’s interested in the sheet music to the more famous of the tunes, you can download all three pages of it by clicking here.

I got the Extended Version of ROTK yesterday on DVD… how very cool!

Nobody mentioned wanting to learn real irish music…

If anything, the tune is based around English Folk Music traditions. Not many “Shires” in Ireland

How, you ssssssneak!?! It’s not been released for another three days yet, officially!

We gots it from dvd.co.uk, didn’t we preciouss?
Yes, we did.
And they was very clever, and tricksy they was, wasn’t they, importing them via Jersey instead of the mainland UK!
Yes yes they was precious!
We likes the Mouth of Sauron scene doesn’t we?
Yes! But we won’t spoils it for them, will we precious?
No. We won’t.

Yayyy! DVD party at Gary’s. Better buy a bigger sofa.

Aha, so it’s all a plot of the sofa supply companies…

This thread shows the notation for one of the songs, tells about who played the songs and what they played. I’m fairly sure the whistle played in the song you are talking about Notes was a Generation C, but not certain.
Woopecker

P.S. When’s the party cuz I’m coming!

Wow…I didn’t realize that was his middle name. You’d think his mother would have thought better of it before she put it on his birth certificate.

No, I believe that would be “stinker”. And yes Gary, you are tricksy…but I’d beware for one day, [sinister music] perhaps in the very near future the precious will betray you, as it did so many others. [/sinister music]

P.S. Oh, and I’ll be over a bit later to join the party…how does 8-ish sound?

It’s his middle name, all right. It’s just not pronounced quite the way it looks. :smiling_imp:

You know, Irish spelling, and all that.

or hobbits, for that matter.
