High Germany

On Cherish the Ladies’ cd, Threads of Time, there is a track called High Germany, which is said in the insert to be traditional. I have looked on all the music search sites that I know of and cannot find the music for it. I’m sure it can be learned by ear, but I like reading the music. Anyone know where to find it?

I have found a “High Germany”, listed as a march, on JC’s tunefinder as well as tunedb.woodenflute.com/tunedb

Not sure if it’s the one you’re asking about, though.

Larry

Somebody made a boo-boo when they labeled that track “High Germany”, because it is actually “The Wars of Germany”.
That track threw me a curve ball too, because I already knew the real “High Germany”.
Anyway, here’s a link to the information you requested: The](http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiWARGRMNY;ttWARGRMNY;ttWARGRMNY.2.html%22%3EThe) Wars of Germany.

Thanks. I never would have figured that out. Isn’t that a wonderful tune?

raindog,

Do you know where I might find the musical notation for High Germany? I have a nice version mp3 of this tune by the Rat Boys from their “Deja Vu” album

That raises a question. In the notation referenced above, many of the notes are below the bell D of a high D whistle. How do others play this?

My probably incorrect response is to reach for my Hoover Narrow Bore D and simply transcribe the notes up an octave.

I haven’t heard the Rat Boys version, but here’s the version I’m familiar with: High](http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiWARGRMN2;ttWARGRMN2.html%22%3EHigh) Germany.

You can download the Rat Boys version of “High Germany” at ftp://irmus.bke.hu/songs/Full_length_songs/Good_bandwidth/Rat_Boys/Deja_Vu/

What if you played it on an F whistle? It looks like that would be low enough. But that would mean chromatics.

Since the highest note is a B, the octave shift thing is probably fine.

It can be played in the key of G on a low D whistle… it isn’t possible on a high D unless you transpose it up one full octave.
I’d imagine that it was traditionally played on a D flute, since low D whistles have only been around since the 1970’s.
