I’m wondering; is there some sort of natural inescapable progression here? Now that I finally own a Copeland Low D, will I also eventually tire of it, sell it and move on to flute?
Maybe… or you might go to the uillean pipes, that’s the fate of many the low-whistler.

(PS: On a more serious note, I play high whistle and flute, but not low whistle, so it’s certainly not necessarilly strictly ordered!)

I bought a flute and a low whistle around the same time. Actually, the low whistle (Copeland low D) took a year to get here and I jumped on a flute buy on ebay. I’ve gravitated toward the low whistle and haven’t touched the flute in ages. The flute takes a lot of work, which is time away from the whistle. I need all the time on that I can get. The low whistle is a much more natural extension of the high whistle.I keep debating about selling the flute (Hoza ironwood). I’m glad I’m not ate up with ordering $1000 Olwells and all that. Look what it’s doing to Loren.

Phil, didn’t you say something about a day or two ago about swearing off whistle acquisitions? Might this be some form of denial – change from whistle to flute to feed your habit? ![]()
To respond to your question, I’ve been playing low whistle for 2-3 years, and a good one for a year (Burke), and I have no desire whatever to play flute.

So Tony… How much for that unused flute?

Tony,
Yeah well, my new flute can kick your whistle’s ass, so there!

After struggling for about a year to get a sound out of my fife, I’ve decided that my lips just weren’t meant to work that way
. One of the reasons I took up whistle and recorder is I’ve never been able to come close to getting a sound out of a transverse instrument (not even a soda bottle!).

Thanks to all for countering the solicitations of that evil devil, Loren of Wail! He hath sought to entice me unto floutish devotion, yea even unto letting goeth my newly acquired Copeland Low D, once most revered by Loren himself. I’ve wondered whether this flutish flirtation were an even more virulent form of WHOA or the heavenly path promised by Loren. OK, enough, I’m losin’ it. Anyway, I do love my new old Copeland. I will gratefully however accept all leads as to best beginning flutes, flute experiences etc. I will also accept names of any competent therapists at this stage…Regards, Philo
