I’ve been watching all these great instruments go up for sale, and I think, this guy really wants that Olwell. Every time I see a new one go up it pains me. I justed wanted to know, if it’s not too prying, whens the bleeding going to stop. How far away are you from paying it off. It has become something of a saga and I was just wondering.
Jack Murphy
I hope it is worth it.
I know, Jack. I was just wondering the same thing as I read that you (Loren) were putting up your Thin Weasel Cocus… not to mention your Blackwood Rose.
It’s getting to the point where I’ve considered calling for a benefit dinner or something. Do you have any whistles left?
Erik
Jack,
Well, the Olwell is costing me $1300., that’s a lot of fine whistles! Also, to be honest, I’m trying to pay for more than just the Olwell - I’ve had some ongoing health problems that have taken a financial toll, so even after the Olwell is paid for, the sales will continue I’m afraid. (Anyone need a set fiberglass Congas or a nice Mountain Bike?)
Of course, as Jens pointed out, I haven’t exactly been offering up my favorite whistles at Bargain Basement prices, so the most expensive whistles haven’t sold yet.
It is sad to have to part with these whistles that are the culmination of 2 1/2 years of searching for, and finding, the very best, out there. However, I imagine the new owners of these fine instruments will enjoy them at least as much as I have, and it’s not such a bad thing to spread the wealth around a bit
I mean how many great whistles does one person really need anyway?
Besides, I’ll still have my Overtons, Abells, a Silkstone, and my new Olwell flute, to keep me company, I can live with that ![]()
So now you know the story. Thanks for your concern Jack, and maybe I’ll have the right whistle for you up for sale before too long - keep your eye out!
Loren
Thanks for your concern as well Erik, I didn’t see your message until I had already replied ![]()
Loren
I hope the market for high-end whistles hasn’t gone the way of high-end cell phones. My production of Ericssons, Siemens, and Alcatels are way down.
Two years ago, people here were dying to pay high prices for immediate whistles that had long waiting lists…has that changed?
On the whistle board, I’ve seen a lot of Copelands and Abells and Sindts for sale…must be so many good whistles available these days. Hope you can get something out of your investment, Loren.
Yeah G.,
The market has softened I’m afraid. However, overall I haven’t lost too much - I made a little on the Sindts, lost money on a bunch of the less expensive whistles, and broke even on a number of others. It could have been worse.
Actually, what hurt the most was having my Boxwood Rose become unsaleable (and perhaps unplayable) due to problems with the wood shrinking
Oh well, life goes on.
I’ve sold enough to pay for the Olwell now and should have it by the end of the week
Then I hope to lock myself away for so much needed practice and bonding time with my new baby!
Loren
I see that Loren wanted that Olwell so badly that he’s even resorted to selling off his juggling equipment! (I thought the text of that post on rec.juggling sounded familiar. . .) Sounds like you’re mostly juggling your finances, lately. I hope that flute sounds really good.
Dube clubs or an Olwell keyless? Decisions, decisions. . . Just don’t go tossing that flute around!
Keep juggling (finances, musical notes, and various objects),
Aaron

Perhaps, the market is “squishy” because Loren has recently sold high end whistles comprising 9% of the worlds high end whistles production since 1996.
Mark,
Get the heck outta here, only flute players are allowed on this board! (Even if you are correct about my flooding, and consequently depressing, the market)
Err…considering my own flute playing abilities, perhaps I should say only flute owners are allowed here, lest I patently disqualify myself…
Aaron,
Good to see another face from the Juggling world over here! We have a few juggling lurkers here, no Fergie though - this board couldn’t handle the likes of him - they can barely tolerate me!
Even though I sold off those Dube’s, I still have another set: I have a half dozen Dube Fat Boyz, with the now discontinued Deep Blue color laser facet decoration. Beautiful clubs, feel great too. I actually bought the Fat Boyz over a year ago to replace those Custom Europeans I just sold. I was going to keep the older clubs for practicing numbers, but I don’t really get around to working on new juggling stuff any more, so now seemed a good time to sell.
I still have a set of Dube Torches as well as those super cool Dube Juggling knives too, darn things cost a fortune!
Whoops, guess we’re a tad off topic again, sorry gang.
Back to the juggling for me then, financial, and otherwise!
Loren
Loren,
I juggle Renegades, which are practically the same as your PhatBoyz. Sort of. I have some Fat Heads, too, which are unique. And bright orange! On knives: yeah, those Dube knives are pricey; I stick to scaring the wits out of my wife with kitchen knives (and plates and utensils. . .).
Fergie would scare the pants off a lot of the C&F posters, boy. Certainly enlivens the rec.juggling group. And makes a mean beanbag (I have lots of Fergie bags laying around. . .).
More on-topic: I’m a whistler, but have started messing around on flute with a PVC Doug Tipple flute I got for $25 on E-Bay – thing is surprisingly good for the money. However, I’m not finding that whistle skills translate directly to the flute. Sometimes I can barely figure out how to hold the thing, or make it stop bouncing around on my face as I play. It’s going to be a long, hard road, isn’t it? Sigh. . .

Aaron,
I’ve heard a lot about the Rens, no one that I ever run into down here juggles with 'em though, so I just stuck with the Dubes - since my old one’s were practically unbreakable ![]()
Yeah man, the flute is a real bear of an instrument to learn as an adult. Hope I can get the hang of it one of these days! Once the new flute arrives I suspect my whistles are going to feel pretty neglected - I’m thinking I should really be spending the majority of my practice time on the flute from now on. Gotta make those sacrifices…
