OK, I apologize in advance because I know that it’s probably:
- Hokey
- Non-traditional; and,
- Probably not even Irish
Nevertheless, I’ve taken a liking to the tune “40 Shades of Green” and I am bad to worse playing by ear. Can anyone point me to a score? I’ve already tried both JC’s ABC Tune Finder and The Traditional Music Library.
Hi Chuck,
The words and music to Forty Shades of Green were written by Johnny Cash. I’ve searched my music files and don’t have it. However, if I can just hear the melody somewhere, I can make a transcription for you and put it into a whistle key of D or G. I went to a site with the name of the song and they kept playing “Danny Boy” and I couldn’t seem to get anything else! I’ll not give up until I get it unless someone else sends it first.
Best Wishes, Tom
Chuck,
Is this what your looking for?
<a href=http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=6906&messages=5>Digital Traditions Thread on 40 Shades of Green includes lyrics, midi, and ABC.
Well Lee, I guess you have solved the problem of finding the tune!
Chuck, in case you don’t have the software I transposed the tune to D using Melody Assistant and am sending you a bmp file that you can print with Windows Photo Editor or whatever else you have. Looks like it’s got a few F naturals and some Bbs in it! Definitely not traditional!
Best wishes, Tom
Thanks guys.
While I was laid up I was given a copy of the Irish Tenors “Ellis Island” CD. It has no whistles to speak of, but I fell in love with it anyway, especially the title tune and the one I asked about.
And now, even though Tom did send the bitmap file I can use, Lee’s post reminds me that I really do need to learn ABC notation - anyone know of a site that explains it in VERY simple terms?
Thanks again
Hi again Chuck,
Here is a site that has a tutorial on ABC files http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/#introduction I usually use Melody Assistant to read and write them but it can also be done by hand. Hope this site is useful for you.
Best wishes, Tom
He Chuck, Tom and Lee…I would be very interested in that tune also. I got to the Digital Trad site but never could find the midi or ABC though I did find the lyrics. What’s the secret? Gm
