Help me identify this clip

Some time ago, I downloaded a clip of someone playing this clip, entitled “morrisonsjig.mp3”

I can’t remember where I downloaded it, or who was playing it, or anything else about it. It’s just one of those files sitting on my computer, but…I think it’s terrific! I’d love to know who’s playing it. It could be someone here at C&F. I hope I’m not violating any copyright, but it seems to be an excerpt anyway.

Anyway, I’m posting this in the hope that someone here will recognize this. Of course, there’s always the possibility that 12 people will come forward and say “I’m playing in that clip.”

It sounds like a recorder to me, not a whistle, if that’s any help.

I considered that, with all the chromatic runs, but the timbre sounds pretty whistle-like to me. I know there are some whistle players who can work chromatic miracles. However, you may be right; it could be a recorder.

It’s not just the chromatics. It’s the timbre especially in the 2nd register, and the note attack envelopes, and the pretty obvious register break between D and E (instead of C and D on whistle). I used to play some jazz recorder, and I’d bet real money on a Baroque-bore soprano recorder here.

I’d wager a few pennies on James Morrison spinning in his grave, too.

I’d agree it is a recorder. I’ve never heard a whistle with that sort of sound. The backup guys were playing Morrison’s…sort of. The recorder guy was just improvising against it. Not many chromatics I don’t think, just lots of scales. The end result would make the folks at thesession.org scream in agony. I thought it was kind of a nice but very nontraditional approach to things.

And there is something to be said for that, isn’t there? :smiling_imp:

Charlie Parker meets Charlie Lennon, or something like that …

I just listened again and picked up the register break. I have to say that I more than half thought this might be you playing.

Too bad it’s not whistle, though. I just like the idea that this could be done with a whistle. But if it’s a jazz recorder player, that really narrows the field. Probably a teaser clip from somebody’s web site…
