Bonus points if you can identify the player.
Best wishes,
Jerry
It’s “The Toy Parade” by Dave Kahn, Mort Greene, and Melvyn Lenard Gordon. It’s also … well, you know.
I’m guessing it’s someone who stopped by your Comhaltas booth over the weekend.
Well, according to the player, it’s “Beaumont’s Advance,” but he may have made that up (in honor of whom? more bonus points here).
Best wishes,
Jerry
That’s good! Followed by “Billingsley’s Retreat”, no doubt.
I was going to suggest “Jerry’s Beaver Hat” … which actually fits perfectly (the title, that is, not necessarily the hat).
Or maybe “Cock Up Your Beaver”. That’s another hat. Of course.
Any takers on the identity of the player?
He’s an All Ireland champion in another category than whistle, senior whistle All Ireland runner up in 1975.
Best wishes,
Jerry
Well, since there have been no other takers, I vote for Mr. McCullough.
Dr. McCullough, it is.
Best wishes,
Jerry
Jerry forced me at sharpened whistlepoint to record many many many tunes even more unusual than this/// ![]()
But seriously, it was great meeting you, Jerry — you’re a dedicated craftsman and I’m really liking your whistles, especially the C and Bb… hope you had a great weekend at CCE and play with you again soon.
Best,
L.E. McCullough
And it was great meeting you too, L.E.
It was a tremendous pleasure to sit for over an hour while L.E. tried out a pile of whistles. His playing has a playfulness and spontaneity and a gorgeous effortless, fluid quality.
The other amazing thing about listening to L.E. cut loose on a whistle is, he spontaneously draws from everywhere – popular culture, all world music traditions, classical, etc. in a way that is faithful to the sources and makes sense instantly to the listener.
Not just a virtuoso of whistle, but a virtuoso of music and musical culture.
And for the record, that’s a Freeman tweaked Bb Generation in the soundclip at the start of this thread.
Best wishes,
Jerry
