This is the name of group I’ve just discovered. I must have been living under a rock because I’d never heard of them before and they are fantastic!
I was surfing Amazon.com and since they have cookies on me they often recomend CDs based on previous purchases. Well this one came up.
I listened to some of the snippets and got hooked. This is a Canadian band, from Newfoundland. They blend Irish trad., sailing songs and new compositions. They have whistles, high and low, fiddles, bodhran, guitars and great vocals.
It’s not the type of music for people who like being depressed. You can’t help but want to sing and dance along.
I also bought a live compilation CD called “Road Rage” and their concerts sound like a blast. I checked their website and they are scheduled to be in Winnipeg on Oct. 4th. My birthday. The temptation is great.
Funny you should mention them, I caught them on E-Town on PBS radio on Saturday, really enjoyed their set, as did the audience clearly. Try looking here for a recording of the show (about half-way down the page, with Midnight Oil, who I’m afraid haven’t changed much)
(The stream link doesn’t work for me but the save does)
It only feels kinky the first time.

They’re great with a very loyal following. The guy makes the most with not much of a singing voice but sure is lovable. LiveIreland for a while was playing “Tom Hinks” (?) or something like that and I really started to like em.
Missed ya, TOFU stuffer but that signature is kind of, well, icky…
Hey…I discovered GBS the same way too (listening to soundclips). But I prefer their earlier albums…more folkish. And they tend to sing a lot. Erm, but I don’t mind their singing…it’s rather nice to listen to
-First heard them play a bold “Lukey” on the “Fire In The Kitchen” CD, the liveliest group on it. -Pieces on their albums “Turn” and “Rant and Roar” are by turns rousing, humorous or quiet, done with good musicianship as well as an evident good time. I wouldn’t pass up a chance to see them perform live.
..Whistlito ergo…

Mary, I could have thought that living in Bismarck North Dakota, that radio and television waves from the CBC haven’t drifted down that way. About a month ago the CBC did an hour special on the GBS, which was really good.
I was gonna suggest the CBC special, but that darn MarkB beat me to it.
And the best thing on the "Fire in the Kitchen"CD is the La Bouttine Souriante cut-last one on the CD with everybody going WILD and CRAZY.
We discovered Great Big Sea when they played to a hundred thousand folks at the Boise River Festival a couple of years ago. Their concert was a blast and my wife and I have since picked up a couple of their CD’s, including Road Rage. A lot of fun to listen to … definitely stuff to play when driving on those summer trips since you won’t fall asleep to it!
We were at the Guinness Fleadh in San Jose, CA a few years ago where GBS were playing. I had never heard of them, but some hired hands were throwing tape singles into the crowd containing “When I’m Up” and “Mary Mac”. There were four stages at the Fleadh, I hadn’t listened to the tape, and I missed what has since turned out to be my only opportunity to see them live (that said, I caught Sinead O’Connor, Shane McGowan, Chumbawumba, a mini-reunion of The Alarm, etc, etc). After the Fleadh, we popped the tape into the car stereo and were blown away. We wore that tape out with repeated plays before it penetrated my thick skull that I actually liked these guys and maybe I should buy a CD…
Hey, I was at that Fleadh too! I was bummed out that they moved to SF the next year and then just stopped having it. The crowds were large, I can’t imagine why they dropped it.

Me too, on all counts! Well, not quite all, the move to SF was a plus for me, but I had a great time in San Jose, and dropping it after just a few years was a definite bummer.
