Gorman/Clancy Folkways Recording

While browsing in a used book store on Saturday my wife found a 1953 Folkways recording of Irish music featuring Willie Clancy on uillean pipes and John(Joe?) Gorman on fiddle. The record is a 7", 33.3 rpm on very heavy stock, almost like a 78. I took a quick listen and my first impression is that they are playing very fast (although it was a bit slower when I switched the turntable from 45 to 33.3 - duh). I’ll listen again in the coming days. I also had the thought to record it onto the computer and convert it to MP3.

Mike

Michael Gorman actually. Nice find, it’s one hard to get these days. Shame his pipes aren’t goign very well, he was never very lucky with his instruments. There’s another one, a Topic lp [nr 89] with bits of Willie, Gorman and [Gorman’s wife] Margaret Barry.
Also from the same period there is a cassette of Willie and Bobby Casey, this was recorded by Seamus Ennis and Peter Kennedy and is still availble from the latter at http://www.folktrax.org
Of these three this last is the nicer one and it has a memorable version of Willie playing the Flogging reel on the whistle.
