Good sources for bag covers?

I’m looking for a good source for Uilleann Pipes bag covers. Either someone who makes them, or a supplier that carries them. I’m in the US.

thanks for any input,
baen

Baen, haven’t seen anyone who does this especially. Any pipemaker can provide one if you want to pay extra, but most don’t normally provide covers. You’re pretty much on your own, as far as I can tell. Most players seem to do without. There are a few past threads on this topic if you want to do a search.

Here’s about as exact and custom as you can get for covers etc.

and here for uilleann stuff in particular.

Cost is approx $30.00 US I believe. Our very own ‘RockyMountainPiper’ Rodger is the one making these. You may want to give him a call. Cool stuff.

You might try Davy Stephenson of BAGPIPEWORKS - I’ve heard a lot about him.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll either find a local seamstress to put one together, or just not worry about it. I had ideas for a certain color scheme, but it’s not the most important thing–the playing is.

best,
baen

p.s. Brian, thanks for the link—I may consider that as another option.

UnderKiltie stuff. Spewwww! They’ve got some amazingly gauche stuff on there.

cover your bags in saran wrap!

I don’t find that gauche in the least bit. He needs a Navy version of his bags though (of course the Marines are Navy, just don’t tell them that) :stuck_out_tongue:

The point of my priginal post being" Rodger will make whatever you want! CUSTOM WORK is what he’s about after all.

Thanks Brian,

sorry if I sounded less than enthusiastic about your suggestion. I’m interested in a very traditional look, and the pictures on Rodger’s website were mostly anything but traditional. Maybe he should have more traditional covers as his mainstay photos, and then have a “more options” with the leopard skin print, camo covers, skunk look, etc. under that section. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate them, but just not what I’m looking for.

However, I read you loud and clear—he does custom work so he can cover whatever someone wants him to do. I’ll definately keep him in mind when the time comes. I just ordered a set and have a two year wait, so no hurry. I just thought I’d do a bit of research to see what’s out there.

Thanks again for your help–

all the best,
baen

Hi Baen,

If you take a look at his site more closely, you may find that he can work in whatever material you would like and make any type of design you could wish for. It is true that many of the photos on the site are not as conservative as perhaps many uilleann pipers feel they wish to be, but remember the word: Custom.

Anyway, the only reason I suggested Rodger’s work is that I’ve seen it firsthand and the workmanship is first rate.

Best of luck with whoever you decide to go with.

As far as conservitism goes… My covers are at least a touch more on the conservative side than “Cheeky Covers”.

My reasoning for not doing standard Fringe on Brians cover, has very much to do with sentiments expressed here regarding fringe getting tangled and in the way etc. I can indeed do the fringe, its just not my normal procedure.

Mostly.. I do GHB covers. And indeed, it is radical and downright weird to use colors other than black.. And use fabric that costs more than $10 per yard. (with the exception of tartan) For velvet I use Upholstery Velvet, which is not unusual for Uilleann covers, very durable, flashy looking and stain resistant.

Indeed, I could get a substantial discount for 100 yards of black velveteen and /or cordurouy. And go about with an assembly line operation. The following that I am developing would be highly disapointed if I went that route.

Rodger,
thanks for your response, and I enjoyed reading what you had to say. I’m a newbie, so it’s easy to have certain ideas of “how things should be”, without the understanding of certain aspects (such as the fringe question).

At any rate, I’ll contact you via email to inquire more about what I could order. The pipes order was just made, and is two years until it’s ready, but I wanted to match the bag cover with the bellows padding, if possible. I’ve got plenty of time to find out about all these details in the meantime.

all the best,
baen

does a type of cover help you play? maybe easier to hold. rougher?

this subject was “covered” not too long ago: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=12591&highlight=covers+color+colour

Is there something that doesn’t make sense in that camoflauge bag? Does the player really believe that the enemy won’t see him even when he is playing?

Almost material for “Bowling for Columbine.”

To get the best bag:
a) Go to a fabric store and pick fabric that goes with your wood/brass/nickel silver.
b) Buy matching linings for the seams.
c) Give the bag to a professional seamstress for a day (it is easy for a professional).

Stay away from silk – my wife made me a georgous silk bag, but unfortunately, it slips from under my arm.

Cheers,
