Hi, has anyone tried playing The Girl from Ipanema on whistle? What key is it in and/or what key of whistle would work? I assume there’s probably no free sheet music of it on the Web, but let me know if there is.
Thanks!

I have music for it in F. Most of it is playable in that key on a C whistle. It would come out in G on a D whistle. Warning-severe key changes in the bridge. Requires full command of the whole chromatic scale except b nat. I can’t play it.
Send me a privat email if further information required.

Thanks Steve. I was affraid it might have some chromatic stuff in there somewhere…
I’m pretty good at hitting G# and Fnatural on a D whistle, but it takes a lot of concentration.

Ya know, Skip Healy makes a fully chromatic ten hole KEYLESS flute (in the key of F).
Perhaps we could convince a whistle maker around here to do the same?
Hmm, Colin Goldie’s new modal whistle design has 8 holes, how hard could it be to drill a few more? Hey Stevie J., lemme see your new modal whistle for a minute, I wanna try something…

I’ve been thinking about asking for a D whistle with an e-flat hole instead of a C hole, and thumb holes for an f-natural hole and an a-flat hole. Everything else can be cross fingered with ease. Nine holes for a full-chrom whistle. A Jazz special. Can you dig it?

Hmm… There are whistles that look and sound like recorders. Would it be possible to create a recorder that looks and sounds like a whistle? I just can’t see a conical metal whistle with the two “dual-holes” on it.

Ha! Nice try Loren but you’d better think of a better ruse than that to get your mitts on MY new Overton, matey.
Ten holes? No keys? No thanks!

Mark, you’d need to a pinky hole for the A flat, unless you have an unusually prehensile thumb.

Did I mention my great grandmother was a marsupial. . .
Actually I hold the whistles with my fingers pointing slightly down. My F-natural position on the modal DC is actually the position where my thumb rested naturally. That makes it just about an inch down from my natural position on my top hand. I think I can manage that.
Hi! I’ve been trying to play bossa nova pieces on the whistle for quite a while, like “Girl from Ipanema” but its not going very well. You have to be able to half hole with precision, especially in the part “B” of the song. If you don’t do the half holing clearly, the you’ll have lots of flubs and unwanted slides that spoil the tune.
