Geek Oracle: Firefox 3.5

I love(d) the Firefox browser, especially the ease of opening a new tab while keeping others open. However, recently, that feature stopped working. Thinking I needed to update, I downloaded the 3.5 version, but still no new tabs will open. I’ve spent over an hour on the Firefox website trying to find the answer, to no avail. Any FF geeks out there?
Thanks!

If you go to preferences, the second choice is tabs. Make sure the selection marked is new pages open in a new tab. The other choice is new pages open in new window, which may be happening to your firefox now.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I use Windows XE, I guess(?) that’s why I don’t find the preferences/tab option anywhere (believe me, I’ve looked). Currently I’m only able to open a new window by minimizing the current one, and opening a new. Geesh, and I was SO into Firefox.

Tabbed browsing was initiated by Opera, and theirs is still by far the best implementation of it, IMO

Tools/Options

the 2nd tab is Tabs

I assume you’re really using XP. Go to Tools, Options, and Tabs is the second tab on top. Make sure it’s on open new windows in tabs.

Also, you can open new tabs while keeping another open by clicking both mouse buttons at the same time (I think that’s how you’d do it with a mouse…I have a smart mousepad on my laptop so I tap 2 fingers simulateously - the help screen says this is equal to a “middle button” on a mouse…not sure what a middle button is - so try right clicking, clicking both buttons, pushing down on the mouse roller - whatever, something ought to work).

Finally, you can drag and drop any link into the area to the right of your tabs and that will open a new tab, too.

Hope the above helps. I don’t think there is any actual loss in tab functionality in 3.5.

Edit: Denny & I were typing at the same time I see…

Just tryin’ to field the tough ones…

and if all that isn’t enough, there is an extension “Tab Mix Plus” that will allow you to make it behave pretty much however ya like.

Thanks, everyone. It got too late for me to hang around last night, but I do appreciate your help!

Clicking left and right button simultaneously won’t do it, but clicking on the mouse wheel does, the mouse wheel has a button, you can press the wheel down. That is the ‘middle button’. - Also you can left click a link normally and press Ctrl at the time, which opens the link in a new tab.

I use Ctrl+N which will open a new window in Firefox except if the screen has been taken over by a particular stubborn bit of data, like a PDF file or some fancy effects. Ctrl+T will open a new tab.
