I have been a heavy user of clicking the scroll wheel of my multi-button PC mouse when working in Firefox. Clicking the scroll wheel will open links in new tabs, and clicking again on the tab will close it. I like opening links in new tabs, to keep the original page open. But the scroll wheel is not a proper button, and is a little tricky to click, and sometimes accidentally scrolling is happening.
Now I found the solution: I swapped right-click and middle (scrollwheel) click functions, and that for Firefox only. This is possible with a free software called X-Mouse Button Control: http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm
I am a happy surfer now with right-click opening links in new tabs, and right-click closing tabs, as well as right-click in a web page triggering the auto scroll. The context menu is now confined to clicking the wheel, but I use that far less.
The windowz xp default mouse panel is very limited. If you have a custum drivers installed for your custom multi button mose, like a Logitech, then you got some more options. X-Mouse Button Control lets you customise mouse buttons for individual programs.
Denny, thanks, did not know about that add-on, it might have done the trick for me.
It also has a lot of other features. The session manager is much better that the stock one (and allows you to save a window with all tabs, history, etc.) There is a lot of control over what causes a new tab, where the new tab is in the list, tab navigation… I’ve been using it for years. Not that I’m fussy or anal… well, maybe 'cause
I guess that I’m not a geek. I don’t keep tabs of my tabs. I’m lucky and content that my old XP works at all, but it is good to know that someone is keeping tabs of things.
I am not keeping tabs on my tabs, nor of my tabs, nor do I keep any tabs. I quite like to close them, and fast. Not wanting to search for the little white cross on a tiny red button. I am lazy, and want to be more economical with all these mouse clicks when browsing. Clicking left to go somewhere is fine, clicking right to go somewhere in a new tab is great, even logical. And clicking right anywhere on the tab is so simple to close the thing. I think I am multi-tab addicted all right.
