Fans of Cillian Vallely will be pleased to see/hear him. Some nice solo piping from Tiarnan Ó Duinnehinn.
Nice stuff. Tiarnan played at the piping concert in Miltown last week - scary! I swear that he has notes on his chanter most of us don’t have ![]()
On another (mildly OT) note - who is the whistle player at about 23 mins? I thought I caught ‘Flook’ in the commentary, but can’t be sure. Lovely playing, anyway - was that a Bb whistle? (If anyone is lurking from the other side and can answer that and add a maker’s name … looked like an Overton but what do I know!)
Unless I’m very much mistaken, that is Brian Finnegan from Armagh. He plays with Fluke. He can also be seen on the Mad4Trad CD-ROM on whistle playing.
Not half-bad, is he? ![]()

Yup, that was Brian Finnegan on the whistle. Sometimes I really like his stuff, sometimes I don’t. Those tunes were alright. He does brilliant things with ornamentation, but sometimes I think he overdoes them. He also doesn’t seem to do as much flute playing as he used to, which is a shame.
Tiarnán’s playing of “The Coolin” wasn’t really to my taste, but those reels he did were first class all the way. He’s a hell of a player. There was a program on RnaG probably a year or so ago where he played a bunch of tunes–lots of strathspeys (or perhaps they were nominally highlands) and cracking good reels. A lot of “did he just do what I think he did?” sort of moments. If anyone happens to know if it’s archived anywhere, please let me know.
Is there a link for Geantraí ??
The usual TG4 webTV one should get you there … http://www.tg4.tv/
Then click on Ceol - Cartlann on the left hand side. Geantrai is currently the latest show.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip-off PJ, I enjoyed that.
In case folks didn’t pick it up, that was the Vallely family playing at the end: brothers Cillian, Niall and Caoimhin (fiddle- plays piano with Karan Casey), mother Eithne and father Brian (AKA John B.) who run the Armagh Pipers Club. The guitarist is Paul Meehan who replaced Donogh Hennessy in Lunasa and used to play banjo with Cork band North Cregg. I’m pretty sure the singer is Tiarnan Duinchinn’s wife. Talented bunch of folks up that way. ![]()
I liked it. Tastefully done. The way he arranged the drones and regs - not standard fare by any means, but he made it work.
Could some kind person with better Irish than me supply the name of the singer, and the title of the song.
Beautiful singing. Thanks
Her name is Stephanie Makem. She is a grand neice of Tommy Makem. She is the lead singer with Dorsa.
I could not catch the name of the song.
