Pat.

Is that a flat set he’s playing?

It’s just a set without the usual phony quoins, keystones, crown moulding and such - quite nice (me thinks) if you can live without all the embelishments.

I think brianc was having us on there…

God, that f**ing made my night! Great show!

They filmed in Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry. I have some rather hazy memories of winding up there after attempting to hitch out to Slea Head on a Sunday afternoon…

Most of the people featured in this episode were musicians that I had the pleasure of playing with often during an idyllic summer that I spent in Dingle back in 2000.

The woman playing flute with Cillian is his wife Brid, one of my all-time favorite players. “She’s the real musician in the family,” Cillian once told me. Knows buckets of tunes. Cathal McConnell used to give her lessons when she was a kid and it shows.

The other piper in the episode is Con Durham, whom I used to play with along with Brid 2-3 times a week at O’Flaherty’s. I never had a formal lesson with Con, but he taught me a ton about piping nonetheless: I’d sit and watch him play for four hours and then go home, take out my practice set the next day, and try to duplicate what he was doing. I’m glad to see he finally got his new pipes! At the time that I knew him, he had a set on order with Cillian and it was waaaay overdue. This episode doesn’t do him justice, by the way; he’s a great player…does a fantastic version of “The Scholar”…

Nice flute playing from Aoife Granville as well. And great singing to boot. Too bad they didn’t get Maidhc Dáinin Ó Sé on this one…he’s a great singer and box player…

Anyway, I think this show demonstrates pretty well why West Kerry is one of the best parts of the country for music.

Suas Corca Dhuibhne!

The chatty, bald accordion playing fellow none other than Brendan Begley.

Who’s the other box player? And what song was that he sang? Lovely stuff. The whole program was great.

This link should be on the squeezebox page, too.

That was Seamus Begley, his brudder!

There’s a squeezebox page?!?!?! :boggle:

Pat.

Wakey wakey Padre.

Does anybody know the names of the two tunes Con Durham plays here?

I thought I recognized The Butcher’s March and Dusty Windowsills in the jig set.

Thanks

I enjoyed that greatly. Was a wee bit confused on the talky bits, but that is just my ignorance coming in to play.

Thanks again.

We had some tunes with Brid O’Briain and Con Durham last summer (2006) in Dingle, and Ballyferriter. Great people/musicians. Cillian’s playing his own set which looks a bit rough and ready, but gets the job done.

What are the names to the tunes that Cillian plays with his wife and the box player?

The first tune in the set of reels (just pipes & flute) is The cup of tea

Next you’ll be telling me that there’s a whistle board! Now THAT would be rediculous!

Pat.

The Cup of Tea is 3 parts. The first tune is the Pipers Despair (as I know it) and is 2 parts, the last tune is the Lady’s Cup of Tea. The middle one?

No, that would not only be a cruel thing to do, it would be a bold-faced lie.
