  • I’m not always fond of the material he plays, but if I could play half as well as McKenna I’d be doing pretty good.

What was depressing?

Well, Cormac Breathnach’s lost his hair for one thing!

I dunno…Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but I just thought that far too much of the music sounded too contrived for my liking…People too old to jerk around arythmically when trying to play reels as syncopated as possible, but too young to die…There were a few Breton tunes around midway through the episode that I quite liked, though. And Máire Breathnach plays a mean viola…

Just my opinion, that’s all. I’ve always been very much on the fence about Cormac’s playing–sometimes he sticks little variations into tunes that are utterly ingenious, but all too often, I think he comes off sounding like a frustrated wannabe jazz musician…
