Hi folks,
After listening to The Music Of Words on RTE featuring the piping of Tiarnán Ó Duinnchin (thanks for the link Patrick), I was interested in hearing more, so I went to Yahoo and searched under his band Dorsa (under video) and came across this,
http://www.folk.ee/2004/?link=realvideo.php
It is a website of an outdoor Estonian (?) music festival that features 2 separate Dorsa concerts (each is over an hour long, it might take awhile to load!!). You will need to scroll down to 2004 and click on #’s 8 and 9. There’s some great piping (and low whistle playing) from Tiarnán Ó Duinnchin here and you can tell that the crowd really enjoyed the band! There is also an hour-long Dervish concert on the site. Athbhliain Faoi Mhaise Daoibh! (Happy New Year everybody!)
Enjoy,
John M.
Great stuff, thanks for the link John. ![]()
Hi everyone this is my first post. Does anyone know what type of chanter Tiernan is playing. ![]()
Tiarnán Ó Duinnchin plays a boxwood D chanter made by Eamonn Curran from County Monaghan with the drones and regs by Dave Williams.
Cheers

Wow , it sounds really great and great player too.
I always like watching and hearing Tiarnan at play. There is this rare, calm harmony between player and instrument - he doesn’t ‘attack’ his pipes the way many other great pipers do, his pipes simply ‘obey’.
I further think that Na Dorsa kind of hindered him, in the sense that band performance didn’t let him express all his abilities as a piper.
One of the nicest features of his fingers work, which not many pipers achieve, is his ability to put his fingers in insect-wing-like, reflex, vibratto. It has a remarkable effect on important notes in slow-airs, but also gives him more vibratto options in mild-pace dance tunes than other pipers. I once asked him how he does it but he said he has no answer, he simply does it. I am still puzzled by it…
Came across this old thread and it just happened to be the same day that I came across Tiarnan’s website. Not sure if this has been posted before, as I usually troll around the flute forum, but figured I’d pass it on. Man, he is some piper! Amazing stuff of him on youtube as well. Makes me think about putting down the flute and coming to the dark side ![]()

And Tiarnans playing on the Armagh Pipers Club - learn to play the uilleann pipes not to forget.
I have the pleasure to have Tiarnan as “teacher” at The Copenhagen irish festival. He is playing a very living flowing style. He was doing some things on the bassregulator. It soundend for me like some experimented disharmonies in the good way.

Uilleann pipers Klub DK. www.uilleann.dk
Eamonn Curran teaches reed making and playing at the Armagh pipers club, were Tiarnans attends, Eamonn can also make a nice chanter as you’ve heard, he is a very nice fella and has great knowledge on the making of pipes and is a pretty good player also, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of Eammon Curran as a pipemaker
he gave me some great tips on reed making when I was over there a couple of years back, as for Tiarnan he is a great piper and will become one of Uilleann pipings great legends with out any doubt, as also will the young Declan Dillon from Belfast. all the best.
