FS: Reviol 6-key flute in Rosewood

Up for Sale is my beloved 6-key rosewood flute made by Maurice Reviol. When I bought this flute new in 2007, it was keyless, and later on as I began playing more and more diverse music on flute, I sent it back to him to get the keys put on. As many of you may know, Maurice’s key work is some of the best in the business, and is rather unique compared to most other makers. For many years he built bassoons and other woodwinds, as well as uilleann pipes with Cillian Ó Briain. The action on the keys is silky smooth, and their unique, flowing shapes make them very comfortable and ergonomic. If you’re transitioning for a boehm system flute, this flute is a great option because these pin mounted keys feel more like boehm keys than the traditional block-mounted keys.

Now, as for the flute itself, at it’s core the tone is warm, sweet, and smooth. However I’ve found it to be very verstile and capable of a wide tonal pallete, and it has fit right in in a wide variety of performance situations including sessions, contra dances, weddings, meditation/yoga classes, wild world-music dance parties, and pubs full of drunken hooligans on st paddy’s day. You can play the piss out of it if you want to, but it will also play quite sweetly at lower volumes. Don’t get me wrong, it plays plenty loud, it’s just probably not as bright or penetrating as say, a Hammy or something of that nature.

One thing unique about this flute: the barrel is lined with a thin layer of cork to guard against cracking in that high stress where the tuning slide is beneath the wood. In 2008 the flute got extremely dry and hot in a house in MT while I was on a wilderness expedition for 3 weeks, and developed a crack in the barrel. I sent it down to NZ, and Maurice replaced the barrel with the cork lined one, for no charge! that’s also when I had him put on the keys. I did not notice any difference in playing characteristics with the new barrel, and the wood blends well with the other pieces.

It comes with a nice case, and all the flute accoutrements. Why are I selling? well, there just happens to be an 8-key on the way for a certain french man, and being a musician, I’m not really in a financial position to become a flute collector as well

$2000, Obo. Paypal prefered, audio samples on the way.
