With a recent desire for a tenor banjo, and a few other instruments, I’m going to put one of my fiddles up for sale. This one is a bit of an exception in that it has 9 strings total, 5 of which are under strings. I got this idea after seeing a Hardingfele. What sets this apart from the Hardingfele is that this is a Guarneri pattern instrument set up like any other violin in regards to the top four strings. It is tuned EADG, but easily drops down to DGCF. The understrings are tuned(from highest to lowest) AF#EDB, or GEDCA if you have it tuned down.
The main advantage of the understrings is to provide an extra bit of sustain and resonance. It’s sort of like having a Fender Reverb built into your instrument. This instrument carries well, and because of the sustain its really nice to sing over. The fiddle was built for me by Lynn Berg, one of the best Hardingfele makers out there. It also includes a really nice suspension case, and an extra set of strings with the gauges clearly marked for the understrings. I am looking to get 3k for this contraption. If you’re in the Chicago area feel free to drop me a line to come one by and check it out.
Ive been looking for one of these/somethign similar, this one is real nice! I have a tenor banjo I’d possbly offer as a trade, are there other instruments youre looking for too?
I thought I’d just pop by and say that you’ll probably have a hard time selling that thing right now, as the economy of the last several years still have quite a bad effect on people, so you’d likely do well to hang on to that thing for a while and you’ll be able to get a good price for it later on, because it sure is a mighty fine fiddle!
