This is a really amazing flute album, Frankie’s tribute to the great John McKenna. Enjoy!

Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks for the link. But i need some help: I downloaded the album but when i try to open it, it asks for a “passphrase” that i think is file specific, not related to my computer’s security. What is the “passphrase”?

Jason

highqualitymp3.net

It was given on the original page. I was confused for a little also.

thought so, but it still doesn’t work on my mac. must be a computer problem on my end. thanks.

Well, I’ve downloaded it OK too, but can’t open it - at least, none of my media players (Real, Windows, Quicktime) recognise the file type “RAR” - it doesn’t even get so far as asking me for a pass-code… I click on the file and me computer asks me what i want to open the file with… so what should I choose? What am I doing wrong/do I need to do?

I believe rar files are a form of archiving. You need to reassemble them with a program like WinRar before you can play them. Not sure about how to do this on the mac but I am pretty sure there is a similar program to use for that.

Jeff

RAR is a compressed file…you’ll need to find an extractor that will handle it
I use 7-zip

Do a right clic on the “.rar file”, then extract it. Then you’ll have to put the password.

mandoboy is right. For Max OSX use this software: UnRarX: http://www.unrarx.com/

Thanks guys. Will try that. I’ve heard of, but never heard this flute album. I am also downloading the other (fiddle) album linked on that source - which I actually own on vinyl and therefore never get to play anymore!

doesn’t work on my mac either, despite entering the password. And I have a rar application… Has anyone managed to make it work on a pc? Perhaps you could upload the files somewhere - or email them?

I’d really love to hear this…

Success - on PC. Thanks again all for tips.

They are slightly scratchy sounding - as though direct vinyl transfers - the music sound quality is fine - just needle/dust/static crackle (remember that?)! Grand stuff!

Pamela, pm me your e-address (doh - don’t bother, I’ve got it, haven’t I…) and I’ll see what I can do - may have to send them in tranches un-compressed, but shouldn’t be a problem.

Ok I confess that I didn’t download that file, because I’d already downloaded the album from soulseek some time ago. And I didn’t notice the password thing. But yes, it’s highqualitymp3.net. And you need a software to extract it (always downloadable for free).
Actually, the files I have are a bit better quality (no scratchy sounding, clearer and for some reason a few cents higher in pitch)…

Browsing around, seems there are several other sources of downloads of it… haven’t tried any of them, but I have gleaned this information that (bar the track list) isn’t presented in the source in the OP:

Gael-Linn CEFCD 103, 1983. The only other date information is: “arranged by Frankie Gavin, November 1983.”
He plays mostly flute on this album, but also fiddle and even accordion. He is backed by Ringo McDonagh’s bodhran and Charlie Lennon’s piano, and gives a great performance.

The great Galway fiddle player and De Dannan founding member shows on this classic 1983 album that his flute playing is equally remarkable. Gavin introduces some of Charlie Lennon’s great compositions alongside old classics from the repertoire of flute player John McKenna and other musicians from the 78 era. The last track, credited to Gavin’s Irish Orchestra, on which he plays all the lead parts, is priceless. With brilliant, yet understated, accompaniments by Charlie Lennon (piano) and Johnny McDonagh (bodhran).

:open_mouth: I didn’t know that except piano and bodhran he played all the instruments on the album (also accordion!). What a genius…

What is the status of the second recording on that page (Gavin/Finn)? Is that one not for sale too? I don’t want to take money out of anyone’s pocket, but that looks good too.

I got it to work.

Nice.

Thanks for this!

That one is available (on amazon for sure and maybe also somewhere else). An outstanding album, has a warmth feel and a relatively more relaxed pace than most of his other more flashy albums. And of course, there’s Alec. One of my favourite fiddle albums.

The Gavin/Finn recording is not out of print. Available from Shanachie.
