I shared a few pints with him back in Dublin when we gigged in Slatterys and a few other places. A kind and charming man who simply just loved to sing.
Damn, that’s bad news. I’m not at all familiar with his singing, but see his name all over the place as a source for songs. The community has lost an invaluable member.
Sad indeed. Heard him on radio on a recent trip to Ireland, and he sounded in great form, though the thought did cross my mind that it was something like a bit of a “lap of honour” programme.
A little bit of trivia maybe for pipers: Frank Harte was during the early 80s also the architect who planned and oversaw the initial stages of the restoration of NPU’s heaquarter in henr. st.
Tom Munnelly, appropriate and to the point as always said this today on IrTrad:
And as a final word, Frank was fond of quoting these lines from Zozimus’
epitaph. (The O’ Connell Circle is the very grand burial place of Dan O’
Connell in Glasnevein cemetery.)
My berryin’ place is of no consarn to me,
In the O’ Connell Circle let it be -
As to my funeral, all pomp is vain,
Illustrious people does prefer it plain!
Farewell Frank, and resist any offers of tuning forks from the heavenly
choirs!
A special edition of the Grace notes program on Lyric Fm will pay tribute to Frank Harte, tuesday 20.ooh local time. Can be had over the web through: http://www.rte.ie/lyricfm/
A copy of Daybreak and the Candle End finally arrived yesterday. He’s a very expressive singer with a wonderful way of decorating in just the right way to enhance the story. In fact, it’s easy to miss his technique, it fits so seamlessly into his presentation of the narrative. Donal Lunny’s playing (on about half the tracks) is very tasty too.
This was the only CD currently available in Australia; I’ll be chasing up others. Thanks Dub.
Thought you would enjoy Frank Harts singing Wombat
“Candlebreak..” is one of my favourites and gets a lot of playing here.
A very similar - sister album,if you like - is “And listen to my Song”, plenty of great songs and the bould Donal thrown in on a few for good measure.
Frank never did make all that many albums but they are all superb and so full of rare and wonderful songs and many that have become standards in the repetoire of many of todays big names in the world of Folk/Trad singing.
