I play a Chris Wilkes flute. I’d say that it’s a great flute. Very good tone, tune and response. Perhaps a bit difficult to play for a beginner because you have to use a good embouchere to play D in tune, after warming up (a bit flat at the beginning). The work is brilliant, very very nice flute. The 8 keyed model is a heavy flute but I don’t have any flute by other maker to compare. I’m waiting for a six keyed ARHPA flute, so soon I will compare.
The waiting period for a keyless flute from Patrick Olwell is around a year. The five-to-six-year limbo only applies to the keyed flutes. You can also get on both lists at the same time, get your keyless flute, and then trade in your body and foot joints for keyed ones, which means you’ll have an already-broken-in headjoint on your keyed flute.
IMHO Patrick is the best around; he’ll treat you right and his flutes are well worth the wait.
hay!! Thanks to all for your replys, they have been of great assistance, was starting to think there was no flutes for sale out there!!
the site sent by Bill was great, it looks like a good flute, only a bit pricie!! perhaps a bit to near to $4000 for my finances, it would need to be in perfect condition.
Ursula,
David Migoya is a great guy. I have purchased a flute and a
whistle from him in the past. He sells quality instruments and,
if he says there is an approval period, there is.
Thanks for the kind notes from all!
Yes, the Rudall & Rose on the site is for sale, but I’ve decided to drop the price to (gasp!) US$3,500. Two neck pieces and original mahogany case (serial # 1477). Yes, trial period on them (full refund of purchase price) is always 10 days.
I’ve got two other Rudalls in the wings that I’m restoring minor stuff on, but they won’t be ready for a while. Just no time to work on them lately!
Don’t mean to advertise here. Just clarifying the notes above.
right there bill thanx for the information, have taken another look at the site and it looks like damn good flute… have been talking to my brother about it, he would rather have an Olwell. Such a decisson its hard to know what to buy. Have played a flute made by sam Murrey and it is brilliant quality.
The waiting list for the Olwell is of putting, but i have heard them are there is such a lovely note of them. i supose one year isn’t to bad for a keyless.
I owned one of his baroque flutes, and his workmanship is superb.
Get on Olwell’s waiting list, and buy a flute with good re-sale value to use while you wait. Then, sell for a profit, or less with difference for use. I sold my Olwell for double what I paid, and got my money back when I sold my Cameron.
Um, I think there’s a bit of confusion here. What he’s selling is a real Rudall and Rose, not a copy. There’s no such thing as a new Rudall and Rose, only new copies.
Why don’t you put it on eBay with a $3,000 reserve. It’ll be interesting to watch the bidding. Worst case someone buys it, and otherwise you out the eBay fees, but still have the Olwell
Actually, I’m only 1/3 to 1/2 kidding: I’m still suffering some Cocus allergies to the flute so…
Right now I’m essentially living on the run, out of hotels and what not, while I train with a new company, so doing the Ebay thing isn’t really a viable option for me at this point, however I may very well offer it up on ebay once I get settled in one place, probably in 6-8 weeks or so.
Unless of course I get an offer I can’t refuse before then…
I knew there was something about cocus, i.e., some people are allergic to it. You certainly have a good reason for selling it, and I hope you get a good offer.
loren, you’re back! The man on the run, eh. So tell me what you’re doing.
About the Olwell, I’ll trade you my Seery polymer keyless, minus the two stell rings my 2 yr old somehow ripped off. Good flute, and a worthy trade for a (hm!) Olwell Cocus.
Not really back G., I just stop by to check my PM’s now and then, and take a quick look around if I have a minute.
Been in St. Louis training as a PDR Tech for the last 2 months, just got certified today. Off to Charlotte, NC for 3 weeks of additional training and then a “Permanent” relocation to somewhere else in the Southest…I’ve been a Nomad since the end of last year.
The good news is that Flook are playing in Asheville, NC Friday night, so if I drive fast enough (from St. Louis to Asheville on Friday) I should be able to catch the show
That trade sounds great, I’ll take the Seery and you can have my puny Olwell. Hell, I’ll even let you keep the remaining rings on your Seery, since you’re giving me such a deal
