I heard the wait for an Olwell keyed flute is now six to seven years. What’s the current price? I have an old flyer (1999) that shows $2,295. If Patrick wasn’t away until the first week of February, I’d ask him

Hey Bill:
With 6 years to wait, I’m not sure price matters. Just get on his list and deal with the wait…when the time comes (better call him once a year or that wait time will increase), you’ll get an awesome flute. If the cost is too high, then borrow the money, buy the flute, then turn it around immediately and sell it for at least a 20% premium.

Gary,
I’m approaching the five year mark. So, one or two years to go.
I want to compare prices with another keyed flute I’m considering buying while I wait. It costs a lot more than $2,395. So, I’m curious about whether Olwell has significantly raised the price for his keyed flutes. If he hasn’t, I’ll clue him in, after I get my flute
.

Hi all:
As many of you know, I visited Patrick a few weeks ago. The wait is officially 5-6 years for a keyed flute. Here are some prices from the list he gave me (dated March 2001 but he’s still using it):
Keyless rosewood: $550
Keyless boxwood: $650
Keyless blackwood with nickel tuning slide and rings: $1195
Keyless blackwood with sterling tuning slide and rings: $1295
Five-key with block-mounted keys for D#, F, G#, B-flat and C, blackwood (nickel tuning slide, keys, and rings): $2395
Additions: sterling silver keys and rings: $75
Sterling silver tuning slide: $75
Long, double-F key: $200
That’s all. I’ll drop ya’ll a line in 2008 when my five years are up!
Tim
Tim,
Thanks. Just what I wanted to know, and more.

Of course, if you’re buying a keyed flute, you will want that long F key. Trust me on that. So you might as well quote the price for a keyed flute as $2595…
John’s right; springing for the long F makes a lot of sense in the long run, especially if you’re having to wait six years for the thing.
Dammit, I want a six keyed Olwell NOW!!! (Preferrably in Red Cocus, I mean we’re all entitled to dream, right?) ![]()
Come to think of it, the only Keyed Olwell I ever recall seeing for sale was that Cocus Eb that sold a year or two ago, can’t remember whether it went on ebay or through David M.
Rarer than hen’s teeth on the used market I guess…

Does anyone have a picture of an Olwell keyed flute?
The picture of John Skelton on “one at a time”, is he holding the infamous Cocus Olwell?
If yes, then I’m ordering one.
Looks like such a beautiful flute.
