Ursula, the waiting list for an unkeyed Olwell is only one year. It’s six or so years for a keyed Olwell.
But why not look closer to home. There are some brilliant Irish flute makers, with lower prices and shorter waiting times.
The top of my list of Irish makers would be:
Hammy Hamilton
Sam Murray
Eamonn Cotter
I’ve been playing an Olwell flute for over 10 years now, and I’m with Rob in saying that you won’t find a better flute, and it’s well worth the one year wait to get your hands on an Olwell keyless straight from the man himself. However, with that said, I recently had the opportunity to blow a few tunes at a session on a Hamilton keyless owned by a friend of mine. Damn good flute, probably every bit as good as my Olwell, just different in a few respects. Not quite as easy to fill as an Olwell, but then one of the things Patrick is known for is making a flute that’s very easy to play right from the start. But with the Hammy, by the end of the set I played on it I was just starting to work my way into a very nice honk in the lower register. I could see real possibilities opening up for me there with a little more time in on the flute. The Conal O Grada sound is definitely within reach if you’re playing a Hammy!
Thanks there, the Olwell is definately the way to go i think, i suppose one year isn’t really that long for a flute of that quality, i think seamus egan, who plays with solas plays an Owell… there is a great sound of them!!
I was just putting the word out to see if anyone wanted to part with one…but sure why would anyone part with them, i know i wont part with mine if i ever get one!!!
