FLUTE IDENTIFICATION HELP PLEASE -)

Hi all; So, I was repairing a crack in the head joint of a flute I bought last year when out of the blue a “D” jumped out of the wood before my very eyes. Right where I was sanding a layer of super glue. So… out comes the magnifying glass and low and behold there is a bunch of ingraving. Now I think it is just the trade mark of the seller but it sure would be neat to know something about it. I wish I could post the drawing I made of it but Im just to stupid to do it. First Ill tell you a little about the flute: I bought it along with a matching Bb, both of cocus and of single key design. The D is a 4 piece unlined head, with wide silver rings and salt spoon single key block mounted. I believe they are silver. It looks like a typical baroque flute except for the blow holw which is oval, about 15\32 by about 13\32, and the holes are a little bigger then I have seen on baroque flutes. I bought these two flute and a piccolo in one lump for real cheap from a guy in Austrailia, The Bb is in real good shape and the D had seen better days, the pic was garbage but will serve me well as a teaching instrument for flute restoration so that when I take on my Cloos Ill have a better chance of not screwing it up. Now the D, though cracked and loose sounded pretty good so I did a little work on it and got it more or less playable. Great sounding flute. Very complex voice and realy fun to play when I could. Because of the air leak in the head it was hit and miss at best. Anyway its a keeper for sure and I realy dont care that much about its past other then it would be interesting to find its age or something. Now I will try and discribewhatI found.
First on top is a large A. The cross piece of the A extends beyound both sides and on the left side of the cross piece is a circle, like the end of an I bolt, the other side doesnt appear to have anything. Across the top left side of the A, above the cross piece is the word TRADE, and on the other side MARK. The right side of the A continues down slightly below the letter and crosses back to the left side of the emblem. On top of this line are the letters B.S. Below this line is printed DULCET. Im not sure about the E. Now, below all this about an inch is a D and then down another inch is the wordIMPROVED and right below that is the work
LONDON. Thats all Ive found on the flute. Just woundering if any of you experts out there might have seen this before or know what it is. Im guessing it is a sellers mark or something like that.
I was reading a thread about Ebay yesterday and I play by none of the rules I saw in that thread. Though I no longer buy flutes there I sure as heck had good luck. My only rule was to not take it seriously.
So anyone have any idea what I have here? And by the way, sorry I`ve been so lax at contributing here lately, its a rage thing and I find it hard to be civil. Thank the gods for flutes. I way to let it out and not hert anyone, (unless they hear me that is).

Ha ha, you’d never guess this one in a million years, because with B & S you would tend to look up B, right? Wrong! The B & S stands for “Samuel, Barnett”, harmonium builders and importers and dealers in flutes and flageolets. Established 1832, went till after 1920. You also sometimes see banjo-mandolins marked John Grey & Sons - that was another of their persona.

Their mark (probably what you thought was a big A) is an orchestral triangle with its beater. The Australian connection is probably no co-incidence, they exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne in 1880 and 1881. A similar flute (but 8-key) just showed up in Victoria.

I have one in my Research Collection, also 8-key, at:

although I bought it in London in the 70’s. It was the first flute I could do well on, and the first one I copied (to work out how to make flutes for my whistle students). If it hadn’t been for that flute, I could have ended up in a senior executive job in the Public Service, earning heaps. I owe that flute a lot!

Terry

Holy smokes Terry the picture on your web site is my flute exactly except Im almost sure it isnt rosewood. I think its cocus, though the Bb looks to be rosewood but I can find no markings on it. Same style rings and key though. Well what a treat. Now I wish I had let someone good do the restoration on it. I just got the crack filled today and man oh man this thing sounds fine. Now Im too nervious to sand the glue beed off. To close to the stamp. Jeez I wish you could take a look at it. Anyway thanks for the info Terry, I quess I better take better care of it. I didn`t even break it down yesterday when I finished playing it. Just an aside, I paid about 70 dollars for it as I recall. Yep, ebay…

Just a quick update on this flute. Now that all the air leaks are taken care of what a honey. I can`t believe my luck sometime. The volume is much more then I expected and the tone color its capable of is realy amazing. Way to much fun.
