First 50

I wanted to put a plug on C&F for Shannon Heaton’s latest book/CD, First 50, which I just bought and am really enjoying:

It’s a collection of tunes she picked not for their popularity at sessions (though there are plenty of familiar ones) but rather for their ability to sound lovely even when played simply, without cuts, rolls, etc. The focus here is on articulation, phrasing, and breathing in a way that’s always faithful to Irish trad style, which makes it a wonderful entry point for flutists new to the genre. (And yes, there is a small but very useful section on ornamentation.)

Tunes are notated for both flute and fiddle. The fiddle bowings were done by many of Boston’s finest Irish players, who join Shannon on the CD. My husband is a classical violinist and I bought the book as much for him as for me; he can actually pass for an Irish fiddler thanks to the bowings.

Anyway, lots of good stuff here, even for flute players with a fair bit of experience.

Does sound rather interesting. Just purchased the book/cd, I’ll let you know how it works for me.
