This is a LARGE, slightly used book by Grey Larsen. A few pages have text highlighted in yellow. Highlighting is neatly and conservatively done so as not to be a distraction. Both CDs included and in MINT condition. Thanks for looking.
Just so that everyone knows, dont’ buy this book from the whistle shop or anywhere else that sells it for $40 (I came close to doing so myself a while back). Amazon sells it for almost half this price (regular price, not a sale).
Buy it used from Hopkins to help a fellow whistler out but if you are looking to purchase this down the road, don’t pay more than necessary.
I run a mail order business dealing with Japanese taiko drums (real drummers don’t play bodhrans, they opt for something a touch bigger). I sell taiko DVDs, as does Amazon. Here’s the rub - Amazon sells their DVDs to the public for less than we can buy them wholesale (after we factor in the shipping costs to us).
Amazon is considerably cheaper than our price. I can see why many people would buy from Amazon. So why buy from us?
The short answer is that you get a tremendous depth of information about the art, the community and the instruments from us that is frankly not easily available. Want to know where the closest taiko group is? Want to know how to replace the head of your taiko drum? Going to Japan and want to see some festivals with traditional taiko drumming? We’re the folks in the know.
So that’s one reason. Another is that we carry or can special order many obscure goodies that Amazon would never carry. We actually care about getting you the thing you need. We would hook you up even if we didn’t get a profit out of that particular transaction.
Now, those are valuable services to the taiko community. If you value those services and wish for them to remain for you or others to access, we always appreciate your patronage. Obviously there are those for who price is paramount (students, starving muscians, etc.) so we don’t begrudge anyone who does order from Amazon, but we believe that our service makes up for the price differential.
Obviously, for some it does, for others it doesn’t. But if you enjoy specialty shops where you can talk taiko/whistle/ITM/whatever and have the staff get as excited as you are, give some thought to supporting them every now and again.
I only wish I’d known!! I just bought a brand new one. (At a good price though).
My husband and I just saw Grey L. and Andre Marchand at a small festival in Dayton Ohio–front row in an outdoor tent. They were pure magic. I now have a Casey Burns folk flute on order–I think I’m hooked.
I’d originally gotten a Mel Bay’s “Complete Irish Tin Whistle Book”, and while the tunes may come in handy, I agree with someone’s opinion here that the cd arrangements aren’t that pleasing.
I’m having much better luck with Grey’s book, and at his website, he has an “Irish Tune Bank”–(you can get 3 free). Each includes the printable music, thoughts on the arrangement, and an mp3 of the songs. Each packet is less than 3 bucks, (after the freebies)and I find I’m working more on them than my other cd.
My apologies if everyone here is already aware of this, but perhaps another newbie like myself will find it helpful
Tis a very good book with a unique approach to ornamentation and it’s notation. Definitely the best description of what ornamentation actually is, why and where to use it, and with 2 great cds of exercises and some very wel transcribed great performances of the past. Never mind the price. t’s well worth it if your serious bout learning.
